Social safety net braces for layoffs at MBNA
http://www.delawareonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051219/BUSINESS/512190307/1003

Once a month, hundreds of low-income people line up at Shiloh Baptist Church in Wilmington for boxes of free food.

The Rev. Clifford I. Johnson worries that the lines could get longer soon if MBNA, Delaware's largest private employer, announces widespread layoffs as part of its sale to Bank of America.

"People we might not have seen before will be showing up for food," said Johnson, pastor of the church.

"If we have members of the congregation who are MBNA employees ... they might need some help from the church," Johnson said. "There are many day-care centers that take care of MBNA employees' kids. There are shops that depend on MBNA employees. It's going to be a major ripple effect."

Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America said it will eliminate 6,000 jobs between the two companies after the purchase is complete in January. The company hasn't said how many of those jobs will be in Delaware, where MBNA employs about 10,500 and Bank of America employs 1,300. Analysts estimate the state could lose more than 3,000 jobs.

4. More irony:
The very people coming for help are probably going to be the same people who have been giving them money and food for years. So not only will more people be asking for help, fewer people will be able to provide it...

5. Out here in Silicon Valley
You see a 30-something face working as a stockboy at WalMart, and that evening the same 30-something face volunteering at a Salvation Army shelter ("networking") and at 2AM that same 30-something face working as a Red Cross volunteer at a fire ("networking").

I've seen it here in Silicon Valley - and he had an MS in Engineering.

6. MBNA has a lot of good people...
and they don't deserve this, they did not deserve the excesses of Charlie Cawley and the incompetence of Bruce Hammonds either. But those 2 and their minions will do just fine. The people who answer the phones are the ones who will get the shortest end. MBNA, by the way, is as Republican as any company can ever get. (I used to work there and lasted a year).

7. You would be amazed at how many EX dot-commers
are now in the "Allied Health Professions" (to use a Delaware Valley Term) after extensive "networking."
