CBS is considering a proposal for a half-hour sitcom starring Mr Sharpton, Variety magazine reported yesterday. The show, produced by Paramount Network Television, would be called Al in the Family, and Mr Sharpton would play himself, taking advantage of his outsized personality.
The show has yet to get off the ground, but comparisons are already being drawn to All in the Family, a 1970s sitcom - inspired by BBC's Till Death Us Do Part - which revolved around the character of Archie Bunker, a grumpy racist who sparred with his liberal son-in-law.
By its second season, Archie Bunker had become shorthand for a particular US demographic - the urban, white working class male - and it had one of the longest runs in US television.
