(Someone must have forgot to tell Epsilon that Hurricane season ended Wednesday.)

Epsilon becomes 14th Hurricane of Atlantic season

Fri Dec 2, 2005 09:10 PM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Epsilon strengthened into the 14th hurricane of a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season on Friday, but was not expected to retain its intensity for long or threaten land, U.S. forecasters said.

Hurricane Epsilon bore maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) at 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT), just 1 mph over the threshold at which tropical storms are categorized as hurricanes, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The 26th named storm of the season was 1,165 miles (1,875 km) west of Portugal's Azores islands and moving toward the northeast, away from the wealthy mid-Atlantic British territory of Bermuda, at 12 mph (19 kph).

While the six-month-long 2005 Atlantic hurricane season officially ended on Wednesday, the Miami-based hurricane center said it was not unprecedented for hurricanes to form in December. Epsilon was the sixth hurricane to occur in December since records began in 1851, the center said. The last time a hurricane formed in December was Hurricane Nicole in 1998.

Their have been a few post season Tropical Storms over the last few years, but as the article says, this is the first December Hurricane since 1998.

4. watch to see if we get a hurricane starting from scratch this month

Epsilon is based on a storm which came into being in late November ... there have been a few tropical storms or hurricanes which lasted past the official end of the season, but it's unusual to have one actually intensifying in early December. I am waiting to see if there are any more this month.

If we end up having to extend the official hurricane season ... that'll be interesting, to say the least. Ever since that hurricane in the South Atlantic last year, I'm a lot less ready to believe that certain things will "never happen".

7. I bet we see at least one more South Atlantic Hurricane this...
...coming season (2005-2006). Until that happened, I didn't even know they didn't get them down there.
