Anti-Union Activists Hope to Create Son of Prop. 75
November 21, 2005

Capitol Journal
Anti-Union Activists Hope to Create Son of Prop. 75
For Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Proposition 75 was akin to Frankenstein's monster. He created it, could not control it and was ruined by it — at least his "reform" package was destroyed.

The so-called paycheck protection initiative galvanized public employee unions into an all-out war against the governor and his reforms. Unions used it as a smoking gun for their claims that the governor's real agenda was a partisan power play aimed at weakening his adversaries.

Nevertheless, Prop. 75 did come the closest of any proposition to passing in the special election, losing by seven points.
(snip)

It will be modeled after a Utah law called the "voluntary contributions act." That law forbids public employee unions from spending any dues on politics. All politicking must be funded through a political action committee. And governments are prohibited from collecting PAC money with payroll deductions.
(snip/...)

1. They lost. Can't they just get over it?
Californians heard the message just fine. It wasn't a problem with how they got their message out. The message got out, and Californians said "no".

9. Why not a "Dividend Protection" initiative for stockholders?
Why don't the unions fight back and propose Dividend Protection for Stockholders? Make Corporations get permission from EVERY stockholder before they can contribute to any political campaign?

And since Union pension funds (what's left of them) STILL have a lot of stock...

13. How about a "no soliciting for company PAC" initiative
so employees (mainly managers) are not pressured into donating to their company's industry PAC?

2. conservatives know that if the union movement catches fire
again -- then there will be a significant shift in the political landscape.

pulling away from political parity.

fighting and suppressing unions is as important as the fanatical attack on taxes.

it's a cornerstone to permanently altering the lives of the american worker.

remember the union movement is trying harder than ever to reach out to more white collar workers as well as organize undocumented workers.

3. Who in their right mind is an "anti-union activist"?
Certainly, these aren't real workers campaigning against their own interests. It's probably just a group of management types who just want to screw over working people. Why can't they just treat employees properly and pay them well rather than finding new ways to screw them?

4. I'm glad you mentioned it. Looked up the first name mentioned, Lewis Uhler
who was the sponsor of Prop. 75:
Its lead sponsor is Lewis Uhler, a former John Birch Society activist, who campaigned for Bush’s Social Security privatization plan.

The second one mentioned is defined in the article:
Ron Nehring, another anti-tax activist, state GOP vice chairman and longtime crusader for restricting political use of union dues.
(snip)
These people are not ordinary citizens, by any means.

Here's Colorado's own anti-immigrant obsessor, Tom Tancredo, on the right, with Lewis Uhler.

Ron Nehring.

7. Don't count on that.
People are scared for their jobs. They'll do just about anything to keep the boss from saying 'ok, time to move to China/Mexico/Honduras' when a union wants to come in or even re-negotiate a contract that gives the workers something more than they're getting.

It's going to get a whole lot worse before the union organizing of 100 years ago comes back. People today want everything but don't want to actually have to sacrifice anything to get it. If they think being treated as human might hurt a bit, they'll cave, put on the collar and leash and bark when told to.

10. Why don't liberals orchestrate a referendum
Edited on Mon Nov-21-05 08:46 AM by Onlooker
How about a referendum requiring corporations to get written permission from their shareholders if they want to use their money to pay for political efforts? How about a referendum allowing corporations to only use voluntary contributions from shareholders and customers for political purposes? Customers could sign a form every time they buy a product authorizing the corporation to use a percent of the profits for political purposes. Let's keep it an even playing field.
