Bush: 'May God bless the Christians of China'
President attends government-sanctioned church

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- President Bush attended a legally sanctioned church Sunday in Beijing before scheduled talks on religious freedom with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Bush also planned to discuss trade, intellectual property rights and support for the U.S. push to spread democracy in nations such as Iraq.

During his visit to the Gangwashi Church -- one of five Protestant churches sanctioned by the government -- Bush signed a guest book with the words: "May God bless the Christians of China." With her signature Laura Bush, who's accompanying her husband, added, "with love and respect." (Watch Bush after attending officially recognized church in Beijing -- 1:36)

..

"It wasn't all that long ago that people were not allowed to worship openly in this society," Bush said. "My hope is that the government of China will not fear Christians who gather to worship openly. A healthy society is a society that welcomes all faiths."

Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 01:19 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Unless it's written all in caps for him by his handlers, this is the way IdiotBoy remembers the Uniter/Divider line. A puppet cannot memorize words. It can only make sense in "speaking" when ROVErian puppeteers give it voice.

Sometimes his puppet echo memory hears itself as saying:

"I'm a room divider, and I do a heckuva good job!"

taught and lived. (or anyone else that you might include)

He always cherry picked the intelligence and power to suit his schemes
and never the wisdom.

27. I think it's possible to get down to 30....
but certainly no lower. You are correct that playing to his christianist* base will stabilize his polls at some point. I'm just hoping that the scandals still to come and the continuing war will get him down a bit further.

But even at 35, if it continues over the next year, we will have the "killer" title for all repug candidates:

A BUSH REPUBLICAN

* christianist(n) - a person who claims to believe in the teachings of Yeshusa, but does not follow those teachings.

68. I sincerely hope you are right, but..
I don't think so.

(Just as a side note: I was VP of the local "Youth for Nixon" campagin in 1968 - the biggest political regret of my life.)

It was a different Republican party back then. The main reason I supported Nixon that year was because he had a "secret plan" to end the war. Had it not been for the war he would not have been elected.

The biggest difference, though is the domination of the party by "religious nut cases." With those people, facts do not make any difference. Similar to Aquinas - "Faith precedes understanding", these people BELIEVE and that is alll they need. Bush could bite the head off a bunny rabbit on national TV and those people would BELIEVE that he must have had a good reason - maybe looking inside the torso for WMD? (Look how many people STILL believe Saddam had WMDs!)

There was also a theory from back in the 70's (can't remember whose) that says a presidential job approval can never fall below 20% for either party.

The 20% is made up of hard core partisans and also the type of people who have the attitude "My country right or wrong" and also "My president right or wrong."

Add to that another 10% (the religious nuts) and I come up with the 30%.

But I do HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT AND I AM WRONG.

I normally don't like to be wrong, but nothing would make me happier to be wrong on this one.

70. A differing view
He was in a Christian Church and signing a guestbook, making it logical to write "May God Bless All the Christians of China." From some of the responses, you would have thought that this was a toast he made at a state dinner.

He does have a responsibility to point out that Christians are persecuted in China (see the seminarians who have been jailed.) We could discuss all day all the other times he should point out persecution and doesn't, but I'm not going to bash him for this.
