Putting Dems On The Record (on Murtha's call to withdraw) -- HOTLINE
November 18, 2005
Putting Dems On The Record

The Hotline has learned that the House GOP leadership might bring a symbolic, but politically charged, resolution to the floor today that would force Dems to register an up-or-down vote on Rep. John Murtha's call for U.S. troops to immediately withdraw from Iraq. The pre-Thanksgiving recess vote will force Dems to go on the record on one of the year's most sensitive issues and provide the NRCC a roll call vote on the so-called "cut and run" question going into '06.

Update: Rep. J.D. Hayworth is the prime mover of this idea. AS of 2pm ET, House GOP leaders are mulling it over.

3. Good - it is time for the Dems to stop being
such complete and total wusses. If I were in the House of Representatives, I would vote to leave Iraq NOW. I would stand tall with Murtha.

6. This is a tough one but man can you imagine what we could say.
Imagine our best congressman speak out on the floor haranguing the republicans for playing politics with this war & bringing up all kinds of good issues slamming the republicans.

This vote puts them on the record every bit as much as the democrats and could very well backfire if the dems plays their cards right.

Agreed, this will backfire on the Repugs - can't believe they will
actually bring this to the floor.

I don't know why so many on here think this is a problem for the Dems, look at the polls, this is way more of a problem for the Repugs. In fact, this is an opportunity for the Dems to gain control of the dialogue.

18. Exactly, I think the republicans have backed themselves into a
corner here if the democrats play it smart. There is a way to take this and show everyone what the republicans are.

8. The Democrats should..
.. say this is too important an issue to not have debate & discussions with constiuents. There should be a vote but after Thanksgiving. They should encourage Americans to contact their congressman to get their views known. This would also give a chance for alternative solutions to be discussed.

If the polls on the war are accurate, then any GOP who votes to stay is voting for his party not his constiuents. 2006 isn't that far off and this should be pointed out.

10. I can imagine the wording of their "resolution"
Do you stand with our brave American boys and girls who are fighting the terrorists over there so they aren't over here raping your daughters?

OR

Do, you hate America, Mom and the flag as much as John Murtha?

11. Another link ->
House Republicans sought a showdown Friday with Democrats on a proposal by one of their most senior members to force an end to the U.S. deployment of troops in Iraq.

Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., offered the resolution demanding a pullout. The GOP-run House was expected to reject it _ and make a prominent statement about where Congress stands on Iraq _ as the chamber scurried toward a Thanksgiving break.

"We'll let the members debate it and then let them vote on it," said Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., the acting majority leader.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's office had no immediate comment.

15. interesting idea. should they walk out, or tighten the ranks and all vote
for withdrawl? that would be quite a stunning blow to the thugs if America responded by raising the poll numbers for Dems and further dropping them for thugs and the prez.

19. once murtha finished speaking every dem in congress
should have been echoing his sentiments and so loudly that the din would have drowned out everything else. the fact that they din't, that they had to check with their handlers and the polls and their consultants and tighten their girdles and check their make-up before coming out with half-assed statements of support is exactly what's wrong with the democratic party.

20. stupid
I can't believe that even Dennis Hastert, Roy Blunt and the House Republicans are stupid enough to do that! A roll call vote on the cut and run motion would be comparable to O.J. trying on the glove in court.

25. AP: House GOP Seeks Quick Vote on Iraq Pullout
WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans, seeing an opportunity, maneuvered for a quick vote and swift rejection Friday of a Democratic lawmaker's call for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq.

"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. "We will not retreat."

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California had no immediate reaction to the idea of a quick vote before Congress leaves Washington for two weeks.

GOP leaders decided to act little more than 24 hours after Rep. John Murtha, a hawkish Democrat with close ties to the military, said the time had come to pull out the troops.

26. If every Dem got together right now
took this challenge and all voted to withdraw (or more accurately Murtha's sound redeployment plan)I bet enough Repubs would jump from the sinking ship and come over to that position and bury the neo-cons for good. We need to have the bals to try this. They're going to spin the Dems involvement in the vote for war anyway, this is the one clear message that would make that ineffective. Either way we play this one we need to be united and present a smart counter attack.
