CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- The Senate has overwhelmingly asked the Bush administration to provide it with regular updates on how the war in Iraq is going.
The vote was 79-19 on a Republican proposal designed to make next year "a period of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty."
The vote came after senators rejected by a vote of 58-40 a Democratic effort to have the president outline a timetable for a phased withdrawal of American forces.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist blasted that approach as "cut and run."
Top Senate Democrat Harry Reid says it's clear the U.S. must "change the course" not stay the course.
Even though their amendment to the defense bill was defeated, Democrats say they're encouraged by the fact that much of what was approved was in their proposal.
6. Congress already asked for "metrics" and stuff, and got nothing.
I don't see why the Pentagon will suddenly become obedient unless they go after the military budget and impeach a few people. Then you might start to see some attention paid, but not before.
