LAGUNA BEACH – The city today got word that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will help rebuild Bluebird Canyon, an area hit by a June landslide that left 22 homes either destroyed or severely damaged.
In August, FEMA had denied a request for assistance, and then the city appealed. City Manager Ken Frank received a call last week that FEMA wanted to come to town Nov. 21 to prepare a disaster survey report. Official word of the relief plans came today via letter from FEMA.

The city has estimated that $15 million will be needed to fix the infrastructure of the area, and the city has been dipping into its own coffers to finance the project. While FEMA did not specify how much money it would provide, Frank estimates that the city will receive between $3 million and $5 million, based on the federal agency's requirements.
The funding would not assist homeowners who lost homes or in grading the land, but is expected to help with rebuilding Flamingo Road, a major road to the area, as well as sewers and storm drains, Frank said.
