Warning Issued for Birth - Control Patch
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:05 p.m. ET

The makers of a popular birth-control patch warned millions of women Thursday that the patch exposes them to significantly higher doses of hormones and may put them at greater risk for blood clots and other serious side effects than previously disclosed.

The warning from Johnson and Johnson subsidiary Ortho McNeil, makers of Ortho Evra, says women using the patch will be exposed to about 60 percent more estrogen than those using typical birth control pills because hormones from patches get into the bloodstream and are removed from the body differently than those from pills.

Thursday's warning comes four months after The Associated Press reported in July that patch users die and suffer blood clots at a rate three times higher than women taking the pill.

Citing federal death and injury reports, the AP also found that about a dozen women, most in their late teens and early 20s, died in 2004 from blood clots believed to be related to the birth-control patch, and dozens more survived strokes and other clot-related problems.

1. Has everyone heard about the testicle shocks?
they may be the best (temporary) method yet.

No hormone problems. No blood clots to worry about. No strokes.

"Men in Serbia are lining up to have electric shocks delivered to their testicles as part of a new contraceptive treatment....

"The method does not kill the sperm permanently and it does not affect the patient's health."

Dr Bojovic added patients were now lining up at his fertility clinic in Novi Banovci for the shock treatment, as it had none of the problems attached to using condoms, the male pill or having a vasectomy.

He added: "We are hoping to have a small battery powered version on sale in the shops in time for Xmas."

9. Make sure you get the battery with the energizer bunny
and the beat goes on.

So how do you think they get sperm from a bull to inseminate the cows?

5. And thanks for that one too Bloom
I didn't see the earlier thread.

As long as it is not an extreme amount of current, it could be a growing trend - and it sounds much safer than the pill.

I'd like to see some long term studies on their effectiveness.

If it was a choice between Daisy being on the pill and me shocking myself every week - I'd go for the juice. But Daisy may disagree with me on that one. The pill has other benefits for her.

2. I complained to my doctor about the estrogen doses.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 08:56 PM by superconnected
They've always been too high for me and the pill literally makes my skin so soft it tears.

She explained that they used to have only 1 pill - it would be diagnosed for all women - ie. 4'9 and 80lbs to 6'2 and a 250 pounds.
It was because the manufacturer wanted to be sure of the 99 percent effective rate on it.

Later there became 3 different dosages - that still are way over the limit to make sure ALL women any size don't get pregnant.

A high dosage is significantly dangerous to womens health - as outlined in this artical.

Until they finally get it down to where women are treated as individuals and then given a dosage for them specifically, I think many women will continue not to use patches or the pill. It F@#$ them up too much.

I can't use it. I know others who can, and others who can't. Depends on what their natural estrogen level is and how much of a dosage they are getting for their body. Someone half someone elses size is obviously going to be affected more if they take the same dossage.

The patch makers look like they took the same route as the pill manufactures - give women the most estrogen they can to cover all women(any size) getting pregnant, and damn the health consequences on the women getting too much.

They knew the estrogen level well before it went to market. It's not some new revelation to them.

8. the risk of clots is higher in pregnancy than with hormonal contraception
an idea behind the patch was that, through skin absorption, it would bypass the liver, at least upon first pass, thereby altering its clotting profile (for the better compared with oral agents it was assumed). this is clearly not turning out to be the case.

however, pregnancy, planned or unplanned has more health risks than contraception.

in terms of companies using the highest possible dose (as suggested above) -- this is not the case. in fact, the clinical trial for the patch stratified the results by bmi and found that women with higher bmi had a slightly higher pregnancy rate (contraception failure) -- a fact that's probably true for all hormonal methods but people are only beginning to look into.

finally there are many other options (although still none for men) -- iuds, the ring (although hormonal, less)
