Election Wins Show Democratic Weakness, White House Says

Democrats will be sitting in the governor's office in Virginia and New Jersey next year, but as the White House sees it, Tuesday's elections exposed Democratic flaws, not Republican ones.

President George W. Bush's spokesman, Scott McClellan, said they showed the Democrats are "out of touch" with voters because Virginia's new governor ran as a conservative.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine soundly defeated Republican Jerry Kilgore in a GOP-leaning state, despite a last-minute campaign appearance for Kilgore by Bush.

....

But McClellan said overall, the races were decided on local and state issues and were not a referendum on Bush. He noted both states elected Democratic governors in 2001, and that the next year, Republicans won big in congressional voting.

I see the Bushbots continue their Orwellian language of up is down, black is white and war is peace. Now losing is really winning..fucking dimwits.

113. Very, Sadly, Appropriate!
I say we shove right back in their face ala the Dems in California!

"FEEL THE BURN, GIRLYMAN"

"In the aftermath of the California special election the headlines read, “SCHWARZENEGGER ROUTED”, a most welcome bulletin that for inspirational value ranks a close second to “COULTER DROWNS IN SEWAGE TREATMENT MISHAP”. Yet the most relevant factor is not that He Who Gropes has just been groped. It is the way in which he has been groped that serves as a template for liberal success.

Soon after taking office, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared war on the “special interests”, which from his perspective are the employees who serve the taxpayers. Arnold sued to block changes in the state's nurse-patient staffing ratios that would have improved medical care, and then taunted the nurses that he was “kicking their butts”. The governor also targeted educators and public safety personnel for abuse while promoting ballot initiatives designed to skew political power even further towards his corporate benefactors."

I can definitely say that in New Jersey, Corzine ran as a liberal. And if he didn't, half of Forrester's ads were plastered with the "L word" as if it were some sort of federal crime. And Corzine won on being a liberal. Won rather handily, in fact.

but since ALL politics are local it was an ass drubbing for Republicans. Areas where Republicans have dominated for decades went Democratic. So Scottie, you can spin all you want but the Republican experiment in total government control is a failure. The American public is going to change it, locally, statewide and on up the ladder all the way to the White House.

22. Here's what I wrote yesterday
"And when Kilgore loses (he's trailing in the last SUSA poll from the weekend by five points), Bush and his minions will blithely ignore the results, and deny that they had anything to do with Kilgore's loss. The media, of course, will give him yet another pass.

"But it is a sign of how desperate things are for Bush right now that the best chance he's got for looking better is a Hail Mary victory by Kilgore in Virginia. If it doesn't work, well, nobody really expected Kilgore to win, anyway, but he got so close thanks to the magic of the President's unerring political touch.

"You can practically write your own Republican blast fax by now."

I missed the talking point on what a "conservative" Kaine is supposed to be, but with time I think I might have sussed that one out, too. Otherwise, it looks like I was spot on.

"postponed" (will never happen). Warner has many flaws and lies just like the rest IMO.

107. Wrong.
Republican Jim Gilmore won election as VA's governor in 1997 by campaigning on a "repeal the car tax" plan. It turned out to be more difficult to do than Gilmore had suggested and so a phase out plan was adopted, with the tax supposed to be eliminated by 2002. During the 2001 campaign, the republican, Mark Early, stood by that pledge, despite the fact it was clearly fiscally irresponsible. Warner, by contrast, said that he wanted to continue the phase out of the tax, but that it would not be possible to keep to the original schedule. One of the reasons Warner won the election, and one of the reasons that he is so popular, is that he has helped the state get its fiscal house in order by helping to broker a bi-partisan budget package that included both tax increases and tax cuts.

Also, 70 percent of the car tax has been phased out. What remains is 30 percent (not the other way around).

32. Did anyone ask Scottie about the mayoral race in St. Paul
Randy Kelly, nominal Democrat, was the first incumbant mayor in that town defeated since 1974 (he only got 30% of the vote). And why? Because he jumped ship and endorsed Bush last year. He was defeated by Chris Coleman (no relation to Norm), who is also a DFLer - the St. Paul mayor's race is technically nonpartisan.

wow... the logic flips on that one required to reach resolution pushes to infinity.

It's what we call an infinite loop, in programming lingo, and it's a bad thing that indicates a serious flaw in the logic.

But that's just a comment from the reality based community. ;-)

god what the hell will they say next? Going by this a perfect Republican moment will be when the Democratic party takes back the house and the Senate, then they'll have them were they want them by gum.

Jesus - how do reporters stop themselves from throwing things at him when he spouts this bull shit.

As for New York, suffice to say the NYC Democratic party went into the tank (for several reasons, some of them ugly). Mike (after spending MILLIONS) will continue to mayor - which means nothing will get done at the world trade center and he'll start trying to build that damned stadium again (which won't happen either). The rest is as it was this is a democratic town and will continue to be a democratic town. And Mike with his soft positions on Gay Marriage and Abortion isn't much of Republican anyway.

Winning everything helped to expose the neo-con flaws for everyone to see. Winning the govenorship exposed Ahnold as an incompetent blowhard. Winning a second term exposed Bush as clueless and his administration as criminal. I guess you can understand why they figure winning is toxic.

But McClellan said overall, the races were decided on local and state issues and were not a referendum on Bush. He noted both states elected Democratic governors in 2001, and that the next year, Republicans won big in congressional voting.

According to the poll, Bush's approval rating stands at an all-time low of 38 percent, a one-point decline since October; in fact, this is the third consecutive NBC/Journal survey showing Bush at an all-time low on his job approval. And it doesn't stop there: Approval for his handling of the economy (34 percent), foreign policy (35 percent), terrorism (39 percent), and Iraq (32 percent) have all hit rock bottom.
