House-to-house fighting reported during major U-S-led offensive in

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Disputing a claim by U-S commanders, there is now a report of heavier-than-expected enemy resistance in the latest U-S-led offensive in Iraq.

A force of about 35-hundred U-S and Iraqi troops launched "Operation Steel Curtain" Saturday, hoping to wipe out an insurgent stronghold near the Syrian border. Military commanders in Baghdad had reported limited resistance. But an embedded reporter with the New York Times reports house-to-house combat with insurgents armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. At least two Americans have been wounded.

The American and Iraqi troops are getting support from tanks and fighter jets but the Times reporter says by nightfall, they had managed to take control of only several blocks of a key town.

Many families had fled, possibly tipped off.

3. Do they mention the ratio
of American troops to Iraqi troops? I'd be curious to know. 1%, 2%, 50%?

5. Residents Flee on Second Day of Iraq Fight

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Dozens of people fled an Iraqi town on the Syrian border Sunday during a lull in fighting between 3,500 U.S. and Iraqi troops and suspected al-Qaida insurgents armed with Kalashnikov rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Many walked out of Husaybah waving pieces of white cloth on sticks after coalition forces warned over loudspeakers that anyone leaving in vehicles would be shot, witnesses said.

<snip>

Ahmed Mukhlef, a 35-year-old school teacher in Husaybah, was one of those who fled Sunday morning.

"I left everything behind, my car, my house. My wife could only carry our one-year-old and three-year-old children," he said in the nearby town of Karabilah. "I don't care if my house is bombed or looted, as long as my wife and kids are safe."

9. I wonder if they are free to come and go?
If they aren't, then it is basically a concentration camp, in the sense that the British used the term in the Boer war.
