Authorities in the Philippines held a US warship in port while they searched for five Marines accused of raping a Filipino woman while on leave in a former US naval base north of Manila.
The five were not allowed to leave the country yesterday as an investigation was launched into the alleged incident at Subic Bay, a former base converted into a recreational hub. A US embassy spokesman said he expected the five to be charged.
The case threatens to provoke condemnation from groups opposed to the presence of US troops who have been conducting military exercises with Filipino soldiers.
