NYT: Forrester Ad Quotes Corzine's Ex-Wife
Forrester Ad Quotes Corzine's Ex-Wife
By DAVID KOCIENIEWSKI
Published: November 3, 2005

TRENTON, Nov. 3 - With just five days left in New Jersey governor's race, the Republican nominee, Douglas R. Forrester, has released a campaign commercial featuring a quotation from the ex-wife of his Democratic opponent, Senator Jon S. Corzine.

The 15-second commercial, entitled "Quote," has no spoken words, just a black screen that scrolls through a quotation attributed to Joanne Corzine. The quote, which appeared in an article in The New York Times on Wednesday, says Mr. Corzine "let his family down, and he'd probably let New Jersey down, too."

When the article first appeared, Mr. Forrester declined to discuss the matter, describing it as "a private matter." But by this morning, the commercial was scheduled to run on television stations in New York and Philadelphia, and Mr. Forrester's campaign aides said they believed that Ms. Corzine's comments were relevant because they offered voters new insight into Mr. Corzine's character.

"Doug has been so clear throughout the campaign that a private life is a private life, but the news story in The New York Times, and her similar comments in The Newark Star-Ledger and The New York Post, put it into the public realm," said Sherry Sylvester, Mr. Forrester's campaign director. "Joanne Corzine is talking about the transformation of her former husband's political and family ideals and the abandonment of his principles for the sake of ambition."

Although voters have complained about the highly negative and personal tone of the race, Ms. Sylvester said Ms. Corzine had thrust herself into the public spotlight, both this year and in 2000, when she played a prominent role in his campaign for the United States Senate....

4. oh poor ex-wife
My heart goes out to her. She probably only got about $50 million and feels let down. She would've been so much better if she had married the mailman.

Poll shows Corzine lead up

With Democrat Jon Corzine leading by 12 points in a new gubernatorial poll, Republicans yesterday alleged Corzine lacks "ethical principles" to be governor, a tactic Corzine's campaign deemed a "sign of a desperate and failing campaign."

With a Quinnipiac University poll giving Corzine a 12-point lead over Republican Doug Forrester five days before Election Day, Republicans cited a published report that featured comments from Corzine's ex-wife.

Republicans denied they were turning the campaign sleazy. Tom Wilson, the Republican State Committee chairman, said The New York Times report "confirmed what we've said all along."

...snip...

"It's a sign of a desperate and failing campaign that Doug Forrester would inject personal family matters into the political dialogue," said Corzine spokesman Allyn Brooks-LaSure. "We will not dignify their actions by commenting on what was a private matter within Jon Corzine's family."

15. A losing candidate NEVER gains with this kind of desperation attack,
Forrester is toast. Disgruntled ex-spouses do not work as campaign fodder, particularly as 11th hour campaign fodder. Too many people have personal knowledge of messy divorces and they know there are usually 2 sides to the story.
