NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Mobsters, oil companies, a bearded Muslim police officer - and even water-logged hams - have marked a nearly quarter-century legal career for Samuel Alito that ranged from time at the Reagan Justice Department to work in New Jersey and in the federal court system.
Alito, a conservative jurist tapped by President Bush on Monday to join the Supreme Court, has an extensive and diverse legal background that's put him front and center in Washington and Trenton, N.J. - and created a long paper trail certain to come under close scrutiny.
As an assistant in the U.S. Solicitor General's office during the Reagan administration, Alito argued 12 cases for the federal government before the high court. As a U.S. attorney for New Jersey, he prosecuted numerous cases on organized crime, corporate wrongdoing and drug trafficking.
For the last 15 years, Alito has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, putting him in the middle of weighty constitutional issues and far-reaching decisions.
