Bush on Tuesday is visiting the National Institutes of Health to announce his administration's strategy on how to prepare for the next flu pandemic, whether it's caused by the bird flu in Asia or some other super strain of influenza. The president will ask Congress for unspecified new money, not just for a vaccine against bird flu but to fund a buildup of infrastructure ready to deal with any pandemic, said a senior administration official, who spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity.

I think Rosey Scenario was the smoke, and the "magic asterisk" represented the mirrors. My wife's been reading an interesting book on the history of homeopathy which goes into the 1917 epidemic. It seems that both aspirin and digitalis were new on the market and all the rage. Folks were taking them like candy and this may have heavily contributed to the death rate, as both boost heart rates and push extra fluids into the lungs.
By the way, homeopathy was apparently way more effective than the alopathic treatment of the day, something like 17% mortality rate to alopathics 56% (I'm being sloppy here and referencing my memory, sorry).
