Senate votes to make Parks 1st woman to lie in state in capitol Rotunda
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 08:34 PM by ih8thegop
An update on this thread:

The U-S Senate voted tonight to make civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks the first woman to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol.

The House is expected to consider the proposal tomorrow.

<snip>

In most cases, only presidents, members of Congress and military commanders have been permitted to lie in the Rotunda.

Meantime, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that the state of Michigan will pay tribute to civil rights leader Rosa Parks next week by lowering United States flags in her honor.

10. I'm sure you're right.
I thought the same thing. I almost think Ms. Parks would tell the Powers That Be to shove it, but I agree that regardless of their motivation she is more than entitled to the honor. She can perhaps Rest In Peace knowing that she gave some dignity to a White House that has been decidedly undignified under the current administration.

11. That's a nice way to see it.
But I think it's like putting lipstick on a pig.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Parks.

16. You might have a point there.
I guess an oinker by any other name is still an oinker! ;-) Still in all, thank you, Ms. Parks. Vaya con Dios.

19. she'd lie in the Capitol
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 10:03 PM by northzax
not the White House, so it does nothing for Chimpy.

I'll wait in line to pay my respects, no question. (hell, I did it for Reagan under protest, this one would be my honor)

and it's worth noting that the obstructionists confirmed two more federal judges today. that's five this month.

8. Ms. Parks did as much as any single person...
to make this a greater nation.

She showed us how any change for the better, any revolution, must begin with one brave soul.

She certainly deserves this honor.

I will withhold on speculating on any ulterior motives by the Senate and be happy that they did the right thing.

15. NOLA could be a factor along with a laundry list….
But me thinks the primary factor might be that little stat indicating the twit has but 2% of the black concurrence…..and taking into account the error factor….that could be a minus figure…

32. That's a fortuitously bad picture placement
It makes it seem like you're saying that Rosa Parks deserves the same fate as Thich Quang Duc (i.e., public burning, even if Thich's was self-inflicted to protest the Diem tyranny) when obviously you don't mean it at all.

That's the evil of autoformatting, I guess ...

28. Southern Senators grudgingly went along with the proposal, but
... offered an amendment to make Parks lay in the rear portion of the rotunda, and she'd have to be moved if a white man needs the space to lay in....

Governor Granholm requests they are lowered everytime a soldier with ties to Michigan dies in the war

36. That the initiative should come from the Senate is
particularly pleasing, and can only enhance its status appreciably, after so much dereliction in such areas as civil rights - notably after WWII, pre-Rosa Parks et al.

37. This helps make up for the Detroit media's handling so far
Some of the newscasters are acting like the Detroit funeral is the social event of the year, because President Clinton is coming and Aretha is going to sing.

If it is televised, I will say this-Greater Grace Cathedral in Detroit has one of the best gospel choirs around. I would hope that there would be some traditional gospel music sung at the funeral.

however gratifying it is to see this most extraordinary of heroes there. I AM PISSED that she was not honored with the flag being lowered throughout the nation.
