Bush calls recent woes 'background noise'

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush vowed Thursday to avoid the "background noise" of investigations and political problems to focus on the nation's needs.

"The American people expect me to do my job, and I'm going to," he said.

With his political stock falling and several allies under investigation, Bush tried to keep focus on the nation's business at a Rose Garden news conference with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

that 2% was well within the margin of error for that poll (3% IIRC), so his support among African-Americans may be as low as -1%

43. That's a very revealing statement.
We know as parents, when our children are growing up, they like to compare our voices to "background noise" especially if it is something they don't want to hear. But nevertheless they are expected to listen, because once they grow up, the voice of a healthy conscience takes over. Obviously, george was never expected to listen to sound adult advice and never developed a conscience. It has always been just "background noise" to him.

53. Actually, it may be getting very quiet indeed around Bush
Aides and advisors seem to be ever more fearful of speaking to him, and as his closest partners in crime disappear, he may find himself alone much of the day.

I imagine him sitting in the oval office, tapping a pencil on the desk, looking at the ceiling. He listens to the clock tick for hours at a time, thinking about the next three years, with nothing but "background noise" to keep him company...

Washington, October 21: President George W Bush, whose popularity has hit a new low, shrugged off mounting political woes as mere 'background noise' that will not stop him from doing his job.

At a White House news conference with visiting Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, Bush dismissed controversies raging over his latest nomination to the US Supreme Court and other issues.

"There's some background noise here, a lot of chatter, a lot of speculation and opining," the President told reporters in the Rose Garden. "The American people expect me to do my job and I'm going to."

Asked how he was coping with all the distractions, Bush said, "I just finished a very constructive dialogue with the President of the Palestinian Authority, talking about how to achieve peace. I've got a job to do. Part of my job is to work with others to fashion a world that will be peaceful for future generations. I've got a job to do to make sure this economy continues to grow."

Bush disavows 'background noise'
Bush vows not to be distracted by political problems

'The American people expect me to do my job'

Thursday, October 20, 2005; Posted: 6:25 p.m. EDT (22:25 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, jarred by investigations of White House officials and congressional leaders and an uproar over his Supreme Court nomination, said Thursday there was "some background noise here, a lot of chatter" complicating the work of his administration.

But he said, "The American people expect me to do my job, and I'm going to."

Bush's comments, at a Rose Garden news conference with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, reflected the administration's argument that its agenda is moving forward despite a growing list of problems.

The president promised to remain focused on seeking peace in the Mideast, invigorating the economy, rebuilding the hurricane-shattered Gulf Coast and protecting it from the new storm approaching this weekend.

At the same time, he said, "There's some background noise here, a lot of chatter, a lot of speculation and opining."
