UK considering Hicks citizenship bid: lawyer
The Adelaide-based lawyer for Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks says a decision on his client's bid for British citizenship is imminent. David McLeod is heading to Washington today to meet Hicks's US defence team ahead of the start of next month's military commission trial.

Mr McLeod says he has received confirmation from the British Home Office that Hicks's application for a British passport is being considered. "The time for making a decision was six weeks from the time of making the application, which was in September, so we hope to receive an answer from the UK secretary of state shortly," he said.

Mr McLeod says that after his trip to Washington, he will visit Hicks at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to explain how the case is progressing.

"We'll be pouring out to him all the events over the last few months and be asking him to give us further instructions as to the way ahead," he said.
