Bush confident of fair Saddam trial

US President George W. Bush is confident that Saddam Hussein's trial will meet "basic standards of international law" and hopes that it will help heal war-torn Iraq, the White House said today.

"This is another important step in building a new and democratic Iraq based on the rule of law. And I think the trial is a symbol that the rule of law is returning to Iraq," said spokesman Scott McClellan.

Mr Bush, who ordered the March 2003 invasion that deposed Saddam, attended a series of morning meetings instead of watching the opening day of the historic proceedings, but he heard of the goings-on from senior staff, said Mr McClellan.

"We hope this trial will help bring some closure for the Iraqi people to their country's dark past. This is a time to remember the victims of Saddam Hussein's brutal regime and their families," the spokesman said.

6. They're already talking about delaying the execution so
They can try him on other charges. I mean, he's guilty as hell, but he should be facing war crimes charges, not a murder charge.

support something, it's always something bad or untrue.
