<snip>Seven killed in bomb attacks on four Baghdad police stations

BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least four Iraqi policemen and three civilians were killed, along with 21 wounded, many of them US soldiers, in explosions at four Baghdad police stations on Monday, according to medical sources, policemen and US military.

The blasts, which happened between 8:30 am (0530 GMT) and 9:30 am, coincided with the killing of 12 people in a car bombing of the offices of International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad.

One policeman was killed at the Al-Khadra police station in northern Baghdad when a car laden with explosives rammed into the building at 9:45 am (0645 GMT), said police officer Jawad Kazem.

Three civilians were also killed and four Iraqi policemen were wounded in the attack, US army Captain Eric Nanz told AFP

Dozens Killed and Injured in Baghdad Blasts....

<snip>
At least 18 people have been killed and scores injured as five huge explosions rocked central Baghdad.

The blasts come in the wake of a series of high-intensity attacks since the arrival of top US official Paul Wolfowitz to Iraq.

The dead included four Iraqi policemen while the injured included 10 US soldiers and seven Iraqi police personnel, according to medical sources, police and the US military.

....Once again Aljazeera gives an excellent synopsis of the daily tragedies in the f***ing quagmire that is Iraq. :( (I should have posted this instead of the AFP version)

Attacks Kill Dozens in Baghdad

By CHARLES J. HANLEY, AP Special Correspondent

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Car bombers struck the international Red Cross headquarters and four police stations across Baghdad on Monday, killing almost 40 people in a spree of destruction that terrorized the Iraqi capital on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, police and the U.S. military reported.

About 10 were killed at the international Red Cross and 27 elsewhere, most of them Iraqis but including at least one U.S. soldier, the officials said. There was no confirmation from U.S. authorities about the purported American death.

The bombings came hours after clashes in the Baghdad area killed three U.S. soldiers overnight, and a day after insurgents devastated a hotel full of U.S. occupation officials with a rocket barrage, killing a U.S. colonel and wounding 18 other people.

It was two days of violence unprecedented in this city of 5 million people since the end of the U.S.-Iraq (news - web sites) war last April, attacks aimed at the American-led occupation and those perceived as working with it.

11. Could this be their Tet Offensive?
Too early to tell yet? But the attacks of the last 48 were rather sophisticated and deadly. If this continues into the week we may have the Iraqi Tet Offensive on our hands here.

15. That would be a blow to resistance.
Tet was a defeat for the NLF in Vietnam, though was a victory from a political standpoint. I don't imagine that this is a "Tet" because I don't think that there is nearly the level of political coordination among these Iraqi forces as the NLF had.

10. Wolfowitz, stay home and keep your mouth shut
There is no way to spin this to political advantage. The republican spin artists are actually making the situation in Iraq worse. Every time they utter the word progress more people get killed.

13. Iraqi Policemen =
American collaberators. The White House and their lapdog presswould like you to believe that the Iraqi Resistance is indescriminately killing their own people. The truth is that the attacks on police stations are targeted at Iraqis who are cooperating with the American forces for power and profit....much like the French targeted collaberators under the Nazi occupation.

14. It seems the resistance has timed this strategically...
Just as the "good news" offensive tries to translate itself into money from donors and troops from reluctant nations, these attacks show the lack of control on the part of the occupation. Even in Saigon, from what I understand, there was much more stability than this. It is interesting that urban-based guerrilla warfare has been sustained for this long. It must require a high level of support, even if only passive support, on the part of the population.

16. I agree. They can't put these car bombs together w/o people knowing

These cells of resistance are being supported by neighborhoods who know that something is going on.

Neighborhoods that know caches of weapons are nearby

The secretive welding that was going on to construct the disguised rocket launcher? The neighborhood knew.

19. Al Queda ? suicide bombers are not royal gaurd.
Suicide bombers seem to be the trademark of other organizations, not Baathists. Why would Al Queda or some other tereorist group ,who do suicide, attack police stations? Do these police fight terrorists ? I thought the police did domestic crime like carjackings ...

17. But they welcomed us with flowers and cheering!
How can it be that now they are bombing the hell out of anyone seen as cooperating with the US? Why are they bombing their own people and us too? Don't they appreciate the fact that we liberated them?(This is sarcasm for those not yet awake fully.)

I can only marvel at how much spin THIS is gonna take for the assholes to even come close to looking good. Am I the only one that hopes that the entire corrupt administration finally ends up in the Christian hell they condemn others to?

I can only pray the world will one day forgive our nation for what that asshole has done to the people of Iraq.

Thirty believed dead in Baghdad blasts
Bush says wave of bombings a reaction to U.S. progress in Iraq
Monday, October 27, 2003 Posted: 11:18 AM EST (1618 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Four suicide blasts rocked Baghdad on Monday, killing an estimated 30 people, including two American soldiers, and wounding more than 200 others, U.S.-led coalition and Iraqi hospital officials said.

The bombings targeted the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in central Baghdad and three Iraqi police stations.

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Hertling said "foreign fighters" appear to be behind the wave of bombings, noting that the mode of operations did not fit loyalists of Saddam Hussein's regime.

In Washington, President Bush and L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. civilian administrator in Iraq, condemned the bombings and said the coalition will not be intimidated. (snip/...)

Must be those heathen Syrians.

Isn't that what they used to say in the American South, during the days of civil rights struggling and suffering, that it was the "outsiders" coming in, and stirring up the "Negroes, that they wouldn't be doing "this" on their own?"
