Union seeks charges in crash that hurt leader outside strikebound meat plant

BROOKS, Alta. (CP) - Union members at a strikebound slaughterhouse in southern Alberta called Saturday for attempted murder charges in a car crash that injured their leader.

Doug O'Halloran, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers, was hurt Friday night in a three-vehicle collision near the entrance to Lakeside Packers. He was treated and released from Brooks hospital but remained too stiff and sore Saturday to speak publicly.

RCMP Cpl. Wayne Oakes said five people were arrested after the incident and remained in custody Saturday, but no charges had been laid. He wouldn't say whether any of those arrested were plant staff.

Gary Mickelson, spokesman for the plant's Arkansas-based owners, Tyson Foods, also wouldn't say whether company employees were involved.
