The city's battle to avert terror on the subways expanded Friday to include the hunt for a would-be bomber said to have possibly traveled to New York. The man, whom a city source said might have trained in Afghanistan and entered the city via Syria, was thought to have been part of a larger plot for a London-like bombing slated on or around Sunday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cautioned that investigators had not yet verified the person's whereabouts -- or identity. But NYPD detectives and FBI agents were pursuing him regardless. "It's just a matter of determining if that person exists with that name and is in New York," said the official, who did not reveal the possible suspect's name.
Word of the search came as a suspect in the alleged plot was taken into custody by officials in Iraq -- the third so far detained there as part of the investigation.
And it came as an intense patrol continued on subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North. Thousands of officers have been indefinitely deployed from the NYPD, the MTA police, and, as early as Saturday, the National Guard.
"Of course I'm a bit scared, naturally," said Jennifer Chambers, 46, a stockbroker from Valley Stream speaking at Grand Central Terminal, amid officers searching through riders' bags. "Even with great security, if the terrorists are bent on doing something, it's going to happen. Look at London." Paul J. Browne, the NYPD's chief spokesman, said the added security would be in place at least through the weekend. "We'll make a judgment on a daily basis as to the protection and how long that should continue," he said of the future.
