Poll puts Dean far in front of Kerry(More Zogby comments)
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 12:34 PM by unfrigginreal
Howard Dean has surged into a 40 percent to 17 percent lead over John Kerry, according to a new poll of likely New Hampshire primary voters.

National pollster John Zogby yesterday described his survey, taken Tuesday through Thursday, as astonishing. Recent polls had given Dean a smaller but substantial lead. Zogby and GOP strategist Thomas Rath agreed that Dean’s campaign would have to collapse for him to lose the primary on Jan. 27.

<snip>

“Clark’s candidacy is starting to fizzle,” said Zogby, “and Kerry simply is not connecting.” He called Dean’s now reaching the 40 percent mark astonishing and said it was clear that the former Vermont governor is appealing to independents, including those who backed insurgent John McCain, winner of the 2000 GOP primary.

While cautioning that “anything can happen,” Zogby said, “Given where we stand now, it’s hard to see a way to stop Dean, especially if he has a strong showing in Iowa, which he very well may have.” Zogby likened him to Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and McCain in his ability to bond with voters.

14. Dean
Dean is going to have to make some smart moves soon. First he needs to move away from the idea that all of the Bush tax cuts should be repealed. Going in out and calling for a tax hike is not the best way to get elected, right Mr. Mondale?

19. Dean has rewritten every other rule so far
I wouldn't count him off on this one either. He's got a damned fine explanation for doing it his way -- one that resonates as truthful, practical, reasonable. Of course, the hardened "hate the govt, hate all taxes" folks wouldn't be voting for him in any case.

We'll see. My bet's on Howard.

21. I'm betting on Howard Dean also
He seems to know what he's doing, and his strategy seems to be working well. He is so personable and witty too, which doesn't hurt him any.:wow: :hi:

22. Yeah: different times, different economy, and different candidate
Mondale was probably a decent guy, but I honestly don't think he could've sold ice cream in the Iraqi desert. (Well, you know). The tax cuts were blatantly for the very rich; all Dean has to do ("all," yeah, I know) is hammer that home. Throw in a move that will genuinely help the middle class and working poor (has anyone talked about payroll taxes lately?) and he *should* be able to hit it out of the park.

2. "Zogby and GOP strategist Thomas Rath agreed"
We gotta fall in line behind what those GOP strategists say! They're so smart!

4. Spare us the flaming
Look... I know you're not on board with Dean at this point... but it does us no good to be ripping each other apart! As liberals we have a responsibility to pick someone to represent us on the issues, to be our point man on the national stage, and above all else, to beat Bush next year!

Now you probably think someone other than the good doctor fits that profile better. I'd love to hear your case for that guy. But don't rip apart the other guys.

7. Don't rip apart the GOP?
This article has GOP strategist Thomas Rath cheering Dean on to victory in the Democratic primaries. I think he may not be the best person for us to take advice from.

8. Reverse reverse psychology
Don't bother trying to read some kind of intent behind anything a GOP strategist will say. Because you don't know what their intentions are. They could be running scared but trying to attach their name to him to alienate the liberals in the Democrats. You can't tell, though, because he's not saying it to your face, he's lines on a page.

11. Can we please find some common ground?
I'd much rather be able to have a productive conversation with you rather than continually being laughed at...

Are you interested in mass transit by any chance?

3. If Dean is appealling to former McCain supporters...

That would bode well for a general election, I think. Lord knows, no-one could call McCain supporters far-left liberals.

5. Most of the polls have shown Dean to be stronger with independents
That's the dirty little secret that other campaigns don't want to talk about.

Just a fun little poke at some real interesting math done regarding a different poll and a different candidate. Won't provide details as it was meant in fun, not flame.
