First lady becomes president's defender
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Laura Bush is reprising her role as her husband's first defender, making several trips to the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast as President Bush's approval ratings sink to their lowest level yet.

Mrs. Bush is highlighting the positive that has come out of the storm, telling the stories of strangers helping one another in a time of tragedy.

Mrs. Bush said Tuesday that much more human good than bad has come from the disaster, despite what people see on TV. She said the evacuees she has met in her three trips to the Gulf Coast are hopeful and thankful that they don't have to start from rock bottom because of the donations and the kindness of strangers.

"That's what I've seen at each of the shelters I've visited," she said. "I've never heard a single word of complaint."

1. Because of the donation and kindness of strangers?
I would be more grateful if they didn't have to start over because the nation OF WHICH THEY ARE CITIZENS decided to take care of them.

What a freakin retard.

That's like the boss at work thinking everyone loves him 'cause they don't complain. You know the boss that is a mean bastard and will guarantee that you are pushed out if you complain.

Nobody can prop up something that very few people have even the slightest amount of respect for ie the * pResidency...

have you, Dear Laura, ever thought about walking feely among the people and hearing what they really think? Maybe going incognito to a shelter as a Red Cross worker or maybe a plain old volunteer? Without makeup they might not recognize you.

13. I am convinced this woman does not have a brain in her head....
we must highlight the positive - people lost everything but they don't have to start from rock bottom (just the bottom) so they are thankful. I guess all the people who died are thankful too (they don't have to start at all). She has never heard a SINGLE word of complaint - who are the people this brain dead woman is talking to? According to her and Babs all of the people who lost everything are better off. That's called bush logic.

19. Positive things have come out of this??? WTF
is she talking about? Those who died of starvation and dehydration have not uttered a single word of complaint cuz they are dead. She and her murderous husband had better beware. When these evacuees recover from the shock, there will be hell to pay. Their African American leaders and politicians are not going to let this go. They are just biding their time. I am sure they want to wait until all of the dead are accounted for out of respect. Who knew it was going to take 3-4 weeks, at least, to remove the bodies?

I know that she killed a former boyfriend. She got off without even a citation. But she ran right into him. He flew against a utility pole and was killed instantly. Rumours have it that the two had broken up.

Well, it would not surprise me if she was.

Stupid losers, both Laura & Jackass.

Oh, Jeebus, she did! Does any of this clan have ANY tact whatsoever (this fits right in with Chimpy's "help is flooding in remark).

Well, at least it's a New Orleans reference, I have to give her that.

46. never heard a single word of complaint
>Bush spent about 30 minutes visiting with sick and elderly refugees and a group of parents and their young children, mostly listening to their stories of escaping from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.<

>Asked whether the footage coming out of New Orleans would tarnish the nation's image abroad, Laura Bush said the unrest is a "human reaction to a terrible, terrible disaster."

"They're scared, they're frustrated," she said. "They have lost loved ones. They're in grief. They're in grief for their whole lives."

Although few of the refugees knew the first lady had visited their shelter — about 135 miles west of New Orleans — many said they were glad to hear about it.<

>But other refugees said they would rather have had a visit from Federal Emergency Management Agency officials who might be able to help them find jobs and permanent housing.<
http://www.nola.com/newsflash/weather/index.ssf?/base/news-18/1125703440221792.xml&storylist=hurricane

---

Although few knew the first lady had visited... hmm. clue?

---

It goes to show how overwhelming things are here right now that I encountered the First Lady yesterday and I almost forgot to put it in this e-mail. It actually couldn't have been a worse experience; a team of us were working to put up a website with directions to every Red Cross shelter in the region when we were evicted from the computer room by the Secret Service. There's only one room in the Cajundome with telephones and internet access for refugees, and Laura Bush shut it down for eight hours (along with the food service rooms to the side and the women's showers). You may have seen it on CNN; apparently seven refugees were allowed back so Laura could help them in front of the cameras. If you saw that footage, that's where I put in half my volunteer hours. Not knowing Bush was still back there later I tried to insist on being allowed back into the room to a "Red Cross" guy who must have been a Secret Service agent undercover. A hint for future Secret Service agents: The real Red Cross guys don't look like they want to break your legs for walking too close to the barricade, because they're too busy passing out food and helping people. They're also less likely to use phrases like "Stand fast, sir!" Now, I know this is the sort of thing that happens whenever a VIP tours a disaster site, and maybe Laura Bush handing out that loaf of bread really will lead to an increase in donations. All I can say is, to have paralyzed a third of a day of operations at this stage of the game, it fucking well better. And I tried to position myself to say this to her in front of the television cameras too, but instead I only got a wave and a smile as she hurried past me. Looks like I'm going to have to become nationally infamous another day.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/4/124532/7736

---

>Bush first visited a section of the Cajundome set aside for evacuees with special medical needs, stopping to speaking with the very old and the very young and speaking with the doctors who are treating them.

Next, she stopped to speak to a roomful of Acadiana's American Red Cross volunteers, thanking them for their work and asking about pressing needs.<

>Bush stopped in at a room set up to provide Internet and telephone access for evacuees, meeting with a couple of families there.<

>She finished her visit by joining volunteers in serving lunch to evacuees.<
http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/090305/sub_dome001.shtml

> Mrs. Bush spent about two hours hearing stories from families, American Red Cross volunteers and officials at the Cajundome, which is sheltering about 6,600 people, mainly from New Orleans.

She addressed the media before helping serve a hot lunch of chicken and rice jambalaya. Onlookers used cameras and cell phones to take snapshots.<
http://www.mysanantonio.com/specials/katrina/stories/MYSA090305.19A.firstlady_visit.1d2e6044.html

---

Darned if I can find it, but remember reading an article that said she had arrived after noon, and the 'serving lunch' photo-bit happened a little after 2 p.m. About 30 people had waited until then for lunch.

---

Talk about a sheltered life in LaLa-land. Smile for the camera Laura.
