Nepali police arrest over 100 protesters
KATMANDU, Nepal | September 12, 2005 4:12:02 PM IST

Police in Katmandu have arrested more than 100 activists, including senior political leaders, during protests calling for the restoration of democracy in Nepal.

Dozens were injured as riot police broke up protests Sunday, the Katmandu-based Kantipur Online reported. Police beat demonstrators with batons and fired water cannons and tear gas to prevent them from entering restricted areas near the royal palace.

Student leader Gagan Thapa and activist Padam Thapa Magar were seriously injured in the clash with police, the report said. Both were hospitalized after being hit by canisters of tear gas.

Among those arrested were Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh, Communist Party leader Ghanshyam Sharma Paudel and several prominent student activists.
