Another Storm Possible in Hard-Hit Region
By MATT CRENSON, AP National Writer

Katrina may seem like the last word in hurricanes, but there is a very real possibility that another major hurricane may hit New Orleans or some other portion of the 200-mile coastline devastated by Katrina in the weeks to come.

"We're not out of the woods yet," said Susan Cutter, director of the University of South Carolina Hazards Research Laboratory. "We're not even in the height of hurricane season."

A forecast released Friday by meteorologists at Colorado State University calls for six more hurricanes by the time the hurricane season ends on Nov. 30, three of them Category 3 or above. On average, about one major hurricane in three makes landfall in the United States.

"We expect that by the time the 2005 hurricane season is over, we will witness tropical cyclone activity at near record levels," the Colorado State meteorologists wrote.

3. The whole northern Gulf Coast is extremely vulnerable.
The areas hit by Katrina have no resources to cope with another storm.

There is no gasoline in coastal Alabama or Pensacola.

These people simply cannot evacuate - and there are not enough shelters available to house everyone.

JEB and Riley better have their shit together by the time the next storm enters the Gulf...

7. The Gulf is cooling down -- it's not 90 degrees anymore
it takes science to measure the temperature and bushie's gang is praying and then they imagine what they want to appear and guess what? The temp has dropped like a rock.

<sarcasm folks -- trying to figure out how the alternative universe works>

11. I know that is sarcasm, but

it is actually correct. A huge hurricane takes heat from the surface of the water to create its energy. Of course, it's not long until the water heats up again. Our local weatherman said that if one hurricane is followed closely by another, in the same path, the second one has a more difficult time building strength because of this effect. I don't know how much the water cools, but it really does.

"This heat energy was absorbed by the water vapor when it was evaporated from the warm ocean surface, cooling the ocean in the process."

13. That's good to know --
but home much is it cooled down and how long does the cooling effect last?

I doubt it will last until the end of hurricane season.

Near the end of the hurricane season one hurricane started in the far west -- near Mexico and went east -- and then south. The path predictions were way off. That hurricane was called Lenny -- I believe that was in November 1999.

14. Hurricanes take a lot of heat, water and energy
out of the system. Plus now that we are heading into Sept the day time temps will not be as high so the water will not get nearly as hot again until next summer, this is good. Also, the cold fronts from the north start coming down and that has a big impact on these storms too. We can still have more hurricanes this season but every hurricane reduces the risk of another.

9. Yep, kind of like
"bombing Afghanistan back to the stone age". I got so sick of hearing that and trying to explain that they already lived in the stone age.
