Venezuela offers fuel, food to hurricane-hit US
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050829/pl_afp/usweathervenezuelaoil;_ylt=Andzd6wF1QOk.qwr8aIbUvgXr7sF;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

CARACAS (AFP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered to send food and fuel to the United States after the powerful Hurricane Katrina pummeled the US south, ravaging US crude production.

The leftist leader, a frequent critic of the United States and a target himself of US disapproval, said Venezuela could send aid workers with drinking water, food and fuel to US communities hit by the hurricane....

Chavez said fuel could be sent to the United States via a Citgo refinery that has not been affected by the hurricane. Citgo is owned by Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA)....

1. That is so cool.
Chavez shows Bush how to handle an emergency.

What a guy, and what a great PR gesture.

12. What a finger in the eye.
Some freepers said they're making a list of the nations that DON'T offer to help. They still don't get that offering aid to a superpower is an insult.

3. What say you Pat Robertson?
Gonna mention this on the 700 Club? Hmmmmm?

Last week, Chavez offered discount gasoline to poor Americans suffering from high oil prices and on Sunday offered free eye surgery for Americans without access to health care.

SLAM!!

:wow:

10. How much did we send Cuba?
Wasn't it, like, $50,000? A token slap-in-the-face? Look who one of the first offers of help came from... and a generous offer at that. Watch Bush turn it down...

Developing...

Somebody bring it on...the sky should have been full of helicopters today - legions of them evacuating every living soul to refuge. Air evac is the only solution - alas, we have no commander in chief able to lead.

27. "I'm not big on Chavez...". Why not?
Everything I've read about him--hasn't hurt a living soul, honestly elected, strongly believes in democracy, is helping Venezuela's vast poor population with a little of their oil money--he's a very good president, and possibly a great one!

We should be so lucky.

30. Well, maybe. He's at least taken back some the land for the poor.
Be nice if some of our elites would offer up a couple of acres of their 1500 acre ranches (like Crawford) and such to put up some temporary shelters and houses for displaced persons.

But that's how capitalists and super wealthy behave.

29. Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corp. pledged a US$1 million donation
Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corp. pledged a US$1 million donation for hurricane aid on Wednesday, while the oil-producing country offered a team of humanitarian workers and fuel to help in areas hit hard by Katrina.

The Foreign Ministry said Venezuela was putting "at the disposition of the American people" its Simon Bolivar Humanitarian Aid Force, which includes some 2,000 soldiers, firefighters, volunteers and other specialists experienced in dealing with disasters.

A team from the force is "ready to travel to the disaster zone and help in aid efforts, if the U.S. authorities decide so," the ministry said in a statement.
Defense Minister Adm. Ramon Orlando Maniglia noted Venezuela regularly provides similar help to Caribbean islands.
