Schools block peace group
Board says students, but not activists, can hand out anti-war material on campus
http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050823/NEWS/508230486/1006/SPORTS

BRADENTON -- Paul Waters-Smith, 17, said military recruiters call students sissies and say things like "It's time to be a man" to try to get them to enlist.

On top of the harassment, recruiters target the weak and "promise things that will never happen," the Pine View High School senior said.

Waters-Smith was one of nearly 20 people who urged the Manatee County School Board on Monday night to let groups on campus to counter the messages of the recruiters.

"We are targets for our very lives," Waters-Smith said. "This is unacceptable. We will not be lied to anymore."

1. Yay, Paul! My daughter is in the peace group at her HS
They haven't attempted to have adult activists involved, but they'll be handing out literature and opt-out forms at a number of orientation events. The only restriction is that there not be any partisan identification on their information.

3. Good for her!
It's great to see young people like your daughter involved, and participating in things that have an impact on their lives. Who knows? She might be the one to inspire others her age to take more of an interest in politics, and making sure the people are aware of what's going on around them. The government is able to slip lots of things by us because not enough people are paying attention.
