Two extra US battalions to Iraq
THE Pentagon plans to deploy two additional battalions to Iraq amid rising insurgent attacks ahead of an anticipated referendum on a constitution, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said today.

Mr Rumsfeld expressed confidence that public support for the war effort in Iraq will hold despite polls showing growing disenchantment in the United States.
"I think it'll have the support of the American people, and it will be sustained, and we will be successful," he said.

"And the alternative would be to turn that country and 25 million people over to terrorists and the kinds of people who have used chemicals on their own people and chemicals on their neighbours," he said. "That would be to turn to darkness."

An unfinished draft of the constitution was presented to the Iraqi parliament late yesterday, but deep differences remain between Sunnis and the Shiites and Kurds.

12. I agree
We've poured a billion a day into that place already, most of it wasted and lining the pockets of the greedy Friends of W.

Once upon a time, Saddam had one of the most powerful armies in the region, on a par with Turkey and Iran. Surely not ALL of these people are dead? Saddam had a very effective police force, too--mean and brutal, but effective. Are not ANY of these people qualified to police their own land??

I say leave them to it...and to quote the Dummy, Dick and Condi "...sooner, rather than later." Enough, already!

Right, because it is all love and light right now.

"And this much is certain: No terrorist network will gain weapons of mass destruction from the Iraqi regime, because that regime is no more,"

8. "I think it'll have the support of the American people"...
...the last time I checked, I'm still an American citizen, so please don't speak for me, Rumsfeld, because I DON'T support your war.

11. How about using napalm on innocent foreigners?
Whoops, that would be Rumsfeld himself who did that (well, done on his orders and with a re-named version of napalm).

19. Umm...I thought America and the world were safer with Saddam gone?
And, aren't we "winning?

And, isn't the insurgency in its "last throes"

And, hasn't "the back of the insurgency" been broken?

And, isn't "freedom on the march"?

What sort of mexed missage is the Pentagon sending to our troops?

20. The man is insane
I'm serious. The country is being run by people who are either insane, or criminals, or both. No wonder we are regarded with hatred and contempt by so much of the world. Can you imagine any other civilized country having leaders who say the things our leaders say? I know some countries get their share of eccentrics, but the whole administration?

21. Oh now it is the kind of people who have used chemicals on their
own people..it used to be all Saddam all the time with that line, but since he is obviously predisposed it is time to displace that meme on to others.

Somebody explain again how Rumsfeld who has so utterly screwed up everything he has touched is still around?

22. For over two years, that country has been in the hands of terrorists:
Bushista terrorists.

Dubya broke Iraq open; and now insurgency, and likely civil war, will be its fate, with or without American troops.

Bring the troops home, and send Rummy to stand trial at the International Criminal Court!
