Iraq considers fresh deadline for constitution
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 05:43 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq said that its leaders could seek more time to draft the constitution if they miss another deadline on Monday as differences over a number of thorny issues remain unresolved.

"If the text is not handed to the national assembly by the deadline... one choice is to ask for another one-week extension or the other is to dissolve the parliament," Leith Kubba, spokesman for Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari, told reporters on Sunday.

Iraqi leaders are already working on an extended deadline after having missed the original August 15 date to submit their first post- Saddam Hussein constitution to parliament under the current interim law.

It was believed that the August 22 deadline was a one-time extension, but experts said that Iraq could seek innumerable extensions.

1. '...but experts said that Iraq could seek innumerable extensions.'
I don't believe, and never have, that these people will come to an agreement. They can't. The Shi'ites want to control the country and enforce Islamic law (a corrupt and evil version), the Kurds want out, and the Sunnis are being shut out of the process and stand to lose the most in the end.

Good work george, you colossal jackass.

Army planning for 4 more years in Iraq

Schoomaker's comments come amid indications from Bush administration officials and commanders in Iraq that the size of the U.S. force may be scaled back next year if certain conditions are achieved.

Among those conditions: an Iraqi constitution must be drafted in coming days; it must be approved in a national referendum; and elections must be held for a new government under that charter.

4. Iraq Sunnis Urge US, UN to Block Draft
<snip> A day before the deadline for the new constitution, Sunni Arabs appealed Sunday to the United States to prevent Shiites and Kurds from pushing a draft through parliament without their consent, warning it would only worsen the crisis in Iraq. <snip>

5. Eventually the U.S. will just hand them a constitution.
You know that is how it will end. Article 1 will read "BFEE owns the oil". The rest is just window dressing.
