LAX-To-London Flight Diverted to Boston

BOSTON (AP) - A flight from Los Angeles to London was diverted to Boston early Tuesday because three Pakistani passengers were acting suspiciously, but nothing amiss was found and the three were released after questioning, authorities said.

United Airlines Flight 934 landed in Boston shortly before 3 a.m., Logan Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella said. Three people he described as Pakistani citizens were taken into custody and questioned.

All three were later released and no charges were filed, said Gail Marcinkiewicz, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Boston.

``The flight crew made an observation of their behavior which caused the flight to be diverted to Boston,'' she said. ``It's all being resolved. They will be on another flight this morning for Heathrow.''

19. Don't know either but it's obvious what the solution should be.....
throw them on the ground and pump 7 or 8 bullets into their head.

Then investigate them.

20. "suspicious behavior"
Some passengers also said they overheard the men discussing the recent London transit bombings. Some said they had another passenger take a photo of them posing together in front of the Los Angeles International Airport boarding gate. Other passengers said the men checked no luggage.

A spokesman for United Air Lines said the men ''were doing much more than just walking around" and alarmed the crew enough to notify the captain, but declined to provide details ''because that's considered sensitive information."

3. Ugh. Acting suspicious.
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 08:17 AM by meganmonkey
Being brown? Speaking a foreign language? Being nervous around US authorities?

I'd probably act nervous if I were brown and spoke a foreign language here.

Hell, I'm nervous going through security and I am a white woman who passes for 'normal' - I don't even look much like a hippie anymore!

:hide:

on edit: I hope the paranoid passengers who complained about the suspicious people feel real good about screwing up everyone's schedules.

7. I disagree. This hasn't happened often -- that's why

it's news. Have the bombings in London and Turkey made airline crews more jittery? They wouldn't be human if they weren't more nervous now than before the events of 7/7 in London.

After all, as the old saying says, "Even paranoids have enemies."

5. If "suspicious behavior" = brown skin, there would be many

more planes diverted.

It probably didn't help the three people in question that they were Pakistani, but this is about more than just appearance.

10. That's funny.
Haven't heard of any planes diverted for presumably terrorist fears on the basis of "suspicious behavior" by White People.

But these brown people get the planes diverted every time.

9. Oh no! I'm taking a plane soon

People are always telling me, "You don't look African American, you look like you could be something else."

I always tell them " I am SOMETHING ELSE if you mess with me!" :)

I think I'm going to plaster my NAACP card all over my back and front. Maybe that will help me out!

On one hand,I don't want to be singled out for no reason, but, I also don't want ANYONE to put others in harms way.

All I keep thinking of is TIMOTHY MC VEIGH.No one bothered at all to search or check all the young white guys that looked like him!

GWB is the biggest criminal on the face of this earth and
WE PAY to let him ride in private jets!

Where is the sanity!

13. No win situation again
The typical knee-jerk reaction here seems to be something along the lines of "brown people = suspicious". I have flown on many flights since 911 and there were "brown people" on board the planes and I never once have been diverted to another airport.
If there is an attack of any kind, everyone would question how they did it with all the "homeland security" in place. People would be calling for investigations and placing blame on the people that are supposed to protect the citizens from acts of terror. When it is reported that precautions were taken in certain situations, then a lot of people jump to conclusions of profiling.
I don't get it. Well, I do, but I won't bring that up.

14. This reminds me of a similar incident shortly after 9/11
A woman and her husband were traveling and there happened to be a group of Arab men on board. The woman was imagining all sorts of things, like when the men got up to go to the restroom she was sure they were planting a bomb. One of the men reached into the overhead bins and she was certain he was pulling out a bomb. One of them looked at her and she was certain they were going to kill her .... etc.

To make a long story short, by the time the plane landed the woman had gotten the flight crew and passengers worked up into mass hysteria and the police stormed the plane and arrested the Arabs.

Oopsie. Turns out the men were members of a band going to a gig.

Wonder if that brainless wonder ever apologized ...

I flew UA to London myself recently. What a shit of a trip is all I can say. My 50 cent litte penny sized pin I had on my t-shirt set off their awhole alarms I think and they searched me and then finally, they found my little pin on my t-shirt and finally let me go.

FUCK YOU UNITED AIRLINES! I'm on your asses you slimeball company of thieves! I'll never fly UA (or likely anywhere) again!

:grr:

21. I'll bet nobody was suspicious of Atta and Company
I'll bet they looked perfectly normal and calm until the jihad headbands went on and the razors came out.

Shit, in the video of Atta and his buddy going through security in Portland, they look like a couple of dot-commers. I'll bet nobody suspected a fucking thing.
