St. Johns Co. men sentenced for selling bad equipment to military

The Associated Press
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
Two men were sent to federal prison Monday after saying they conspired to supply faulty aircraft parts and other equipment to the military, including items meant for use by soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan sentenced Horace Daughtrey to three years, 10 months in prison and George Searcy to three years and one month.

"It clearly is a very serious matter, not only in the scope of the loss, but also in the potential consequences for the military ... in the field," the judge said.

Searcy and Daughtrey, both of nearby St. Johns County, were accused of setting up 30 equipment supply companies that won $7.4 million in contracts bid over the Internet to supply the military, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

The conspiracy to which they pleaded guilty started when they discovered that the Defense Department didn't check backgrounds and accepted bids online for supply contracts worth less than $100,000, prosecutors said.
