Burger Empire Billionaire Pushed International Peace Efforts
Associated Press
Monday, October 13, 2003; Page A04

SAN DIEGO -- Joan B. Kroc, the billionaire widow of McDonald's Corp. founder Ray Kroc who was known for her philanthropy, died yesterday of brain cancer. She was 75.

Kroc had become known as a major donor to organizations working to promote world peace, including think tanks carrying her name at the University of Notre Dame and the University of San Diego.

She married Ray Kroc in 1969 and they moved from Chicago to San Diego in 1976, two years after purchasing the San Diego Padres and preventing the baseball team's planned move to the District.

1. Very sad passing
Kroc had told friends and acquaintances recently that she was deeply concerned about the turn in world events since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

"She was very opposed to the war in Iraq and war in general," Appleby said. "She really thought the war in Iraq was a misadventure from the beginning."

4. Mrs. Kroc helped the flood victims a few years back...
... when thousands were left homeless in North Dakota, she arranged for hotel rooms for ALL. She picked up the tab, anonymously. A year or so later, her identity was leaked.

A great heart, hers. Her unique kindness will be missed.

BTW: She was one of the greatest supporters of the Democratic Party.

5. A great lady
She spent her money to help others, unlike some people I could mention.

Lux perpetua luceat eam.
