"Downing Street Memo Anniversary – 150 Events Planned"
Downing Street Memo Anniversary – 150 Events Planned
By Political Affairs
7-17-05

To highlight several leaked British government documents that indicate the Bush administration was "fixing" intelligence to support the drive to war with Iraq, activists around the country are planning over 150 events on July 23, 2005. July 23 will mark the three-year anniversary of the meeting at #10 Downing Street in London, England, the official residence of the British Prime Minister, which was recorded in the now infamous minutes known as the "Downing Street Memo."

Several of the events will be hosted by or participated in by Members of Congress, including John Conyers in Detroit, Jim McDermott in Seattle, Barbara Lee in Oakland, Maxine Waters in Los Angeles, and Maurice Hinchey in New York. Congressman Charles Rangel will host an electronic town-hall meeting, answering questions from his New York constituents on the Internet, from noon to 1 p.m., July 22. Congressman Xavier Becerra will host an event in Los Angeles on July 30, and Congressman Barney Frank in Boston on July 31.

Co-founder of the After Downing Street Coalition, a growing coalition of veterans’, peace, and political activist groups that are calling for an investigation to determine whether the President committed impeachable offenses related to the drive for war with Iraq launched the anniversary events. Constitutional attorney and author of "Warrior-king: the Case for Impeaching George W. Bush," John Bonifaz will speak at a town hall meeting on July 23rd in Northampton, Massachusetts.

In addition to these high profile events, on July 23rd, in over 150 towns and cities, prominent speakers and ordinary citizens will hold public forums, perform dramatic recreations of the Downing Street meeting, and host house parties and study circles. Sixty-six events and counting are listed online at AfterDowningStreet.org. Additional events are scheduled for surrounding days.

With the new war memo being released by Raw Story and new torture videos handed over to the ACLU, this will be an interesting month.

2. I particularly liked this passage.....
I have confined myself to the day after the revolution, but extending the time frame a bit further into the future brings additional images and possibilities. Homelessness and joblessness would be eradicated. Toxic dumps would be cleaned up and replaced with gardens and playgrounds. Our skies would be blue and pollution free. Our neighborhoods would become places of rest, leisure, culture, and green space. The whole panoply of oppressions that scare our people and nation would be on the wane. Human sexuality and sexual orientation would be enjoyed and celebrated. The audiences at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall would look as diverse as the people of our city.

The prisons systems would be emptied and the borders demilitarized and opened. Women would be regularly receiving Nobel Prizes in the sciences. The Pentagon would be padlocked and the swords of war would be turned into plowshares and we would study war no more. And, finally, the full development of each would be the condition for the full development of all.

--Sam Webb chairs the Communist Party USA.

Sort of reminds me of Big Rock Candy Mountain...

There's a lake of gin we can both jump in, and the handouts grow on bushes
In the new-mown hay we can sleep all day, and the bars all have free lunches
Where the mail train stops and there ain't no cops, and the folks are tender-hearted
Where you never change your socks and you never throw rocks,
And your hair is never parted

Does anyone have this archived, or know where I can find it? I would like to have a copy of it to take to this event. :patriot:
