Damn! He was a really nice guy. I waited on him a few times years ago. Big tipper - and very pleasant.

3. died in his sleep and lived near Santa Anita racetrack
and was paralyzed after a car accident in 1991.

He was probably the best jockey of all times. We'll miss you Willie! RIP!

4. So many greats...
gone in the past year or so. Johnny Longden, Seattle Slew, Spectacular Bid among them. I pay more attention to the horses, still, it is sad to hear of "Shoe's" death. Good to know there are some others here who follow TB racing.

I read three of his books and thought they were good! I suspect he did a lot of reading between races, and it showed.
