U.S. May Expand Access To Endangered Species (WP)

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse... Oh, if only animals could vote, or pay taxes, or peed oil...

The Bush administration is proposing far-reaching changes to conservation policies that would allow hunters, circuses and the pet industry to kill, capture and import animals on the brink of extinction in other countries.

Giving Americans access to endangered animals, officials said, would feed the gigantic U.S. demand for live animals, skins, parts and trophies, and generate profits that would allow poor nations to pay for conservation of the remaining animals and their habitat.

This and other proposals that pursue conservation through trade would, for example, open the door for American trophy hunters to kill the endangered straight-horned markhor in Pakistan; license the pet industry to import the blue fronted Amazon parrot from Argentina; permit the capture of endangered Asian elephants for U.S. circuses and zoos; and partially resume the trade in African ivory (!!!!!). No U.S. endangered species would be affected.

Conservationists think it's a bad idea. "It's a very dangerous precedent to decide that wildlife exploitation is in the best interest of wildlife," said Adam Roberts, a senior research associate at the nonprofit Animal Welfare Institute, an advocacy group for endangered species.

ON EDIT: Later in the article, David P. Smith, deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks said "This is absolutely consistent with the Endangered Species Act, as written... I think the nature of the beast is such that there are critics who are going to claim some kind of ulterior motive."

For the record, David P. Smith was a former pro-development attorney in Austin, Texas. He was appointed by that great protector of the environment, Gale Norton. At the time, he was hailed as a "problem-solver in the areas of conservation" by Secretary Norton.

2. You're right. This is a serious setback...

...for anyone involved in conservation. The crux of the problem is that a lot of these species are very close to the edge already, and could be wiped out or genetically devastated (similar to the problems with cheetahs) in a single hunting cycle.

I have a recurring nightmare where my son is pointing to a video and asks me "what's that". I tell him, "That's an Elephant. They are extinct"

5. The animal issue is just so near and dear to my heart.

Every time I study the appointments and policies of the Department of the Interior under the Chimp Junta, I shake in anger. I realize there are many, many important grievances we have with Bush, but I feel that the corruption and arrogance of the DoI is boundless, and doesn't seem to get enough attention, from us, or anyone.

Someone has to speak up about the destruction of our environment, and the non-humans who are forced to share it with us. I can't imagine a single person, leftie or rightie or somewhere in the middle, who, if informed of the plan, would support a repeal (they won't call it that, but it's what it really is) of the Endangered Species Act. Unfortunately, they're not informed... although the placement of this article on the front page of today's Washington Post is somewhat encouraging.

Sigh... grrrr... sigh. Every day, something new to be angry about.

Seriously, this administration's attempts at "conservation" are nothing but veiled greed. They knew damned well that such idiotic attempts at "conservation" would be ignored in developing countries. They don't care. What are they trying to do, revive the economy with dead tigers elephant heads?!

As for the blue-fronted Amazon parrots, those are in our country now. It's a very popular breed. Were all of them obtained illegally?

There's a lot more I'd like to know about all of this.

It did get press play in my local papers where it was on the front page. Most of the trade in ivory is for traditional medicine and to open this up will just encourage more slaughter of elephants. We really may see the extinction of all these majestic animals in our lifetime. I cannot believe this will pass but I never could have imagined half of what has happened.

But she was unaware of how some traditional medicines were driving certain species to the brink of extinction, like tigers, whose bones are thought to soothe arthritis pain, or wild-grown ginseng, which is used to treat low energy levels.

of conservation. The same article was in the Minneapolis paper today, part of the rationale is that it will help the economy of many of the countries where the endangered animals are. (Per the article it will also help the bank accounts of poachers). Their other rationale is that other countries aren't as strict about this as the U.S. is. So we also have the "Aw, Mom all the other kids are killing endangered animals, why can't I?" theory of conservation.

I do not understand the need this administration has to destroy.

I find it ironic that Smith argues against being "paternalistic and saying 'no, no, no'" to the wildlife trade. I think that we should apply the same logic to the "War on Drugs." According to this logic, we should legalize the importation of certain drugs since it is equally paternalistic to say "no, no, no!" to nations that do not live up to our standards in fighting drugs.
