Intelligence dispute to be aired in public
http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1057562441746

The US Congress will hold a public hearing next week into allegations that the administration of President George W. Bush manipulated the pre-war intelligence on Iraq, a decision that could escalate controversy over the administration's actions.

The public airing of the dispute before the House intelligence committee will follow a closed-door meeting on Wednesday in the Senate at which George Tenet, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, is likely to face tough questioning on what the White House knew about claims that Iraq had tried to buy uranium in Africa.

Congressional Democrats have been demanding a full investigation into whether the White House was responsible for including the now-debunked claim in Mr Bush's January State of the Union speech.

Mr Tenet has admitted culpability for failing to insist that the statement be removed from the president's speech, but Jane Harman, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said on Tuesday that "big questions remain about who forged the documents and the paper trail that followed".

4. I feel a whitewash coming on--
--like the Enron bullshit. Whatever came of that? A big fat nothing.

Our body of elected representatives has become a laughable irrelevance.

8. Me, too, lanlady. The 'pukes will be all complimentary and...
...sympathetic to how difficult it is to "do intelligence," coupled with how badly Saddam needed his ass kicked, anyway. And the Democrats will mount a half-hearted and impotent attempt to cover their butts.

I hope we're wrong.

10. Well, would you prefer they NOT have a hearing?
Then we'd be complaining about that.

5. this could go either way...
but I'm feeling pessimistic. All "investigations" done these days are for image, only, and they always come out with the Repugs smelling sweet.
