Debate downplays bug issue

Topic A - the City Hall bug and a developing federal corruption probe - did not even arise until the end of the first televised debate between Mayor Street and challenger Sam Katz tonight, a civilized encounter that diverged sharply from their raucous campaign.

"The timing is awfully suspicious to us," Street said, asked why he believed that the probe was a Republican dirty trick aimed at destroying his campaign.

"In the true spirit of candor, there are some people, particularly in the African American community, who believe that this is too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence," Democrat Street said.

Republican Katz called on the mayor to disclose everything that the Justice Department told him or his advisers about the investigation. A listening device, placed by the FBI, was discovered in Street's City Hall office Tuesday. The mayor also gave federal authorities a personal handheld computer.
