Young Republicans 'get party started' at D.C. convention
Rallying college students, DeLay warns them about a 'disturbing liberal psychology'
By SAMANTHA LEVINE
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - They may be done cramming for exams, but the hundreds of College Republicans who gathered in Washington this weekend are hardly done with their assignments.
(snip)

After all, the College Republicans are viewed as a critical part of the GOP's grass-roots stampede and, as always, the source for the next generation of Republican leaders.

The CRNC, which many call the Crank, has nearly 200,000 members nationwide and has raised $20.1 million since 2001.
(snip)

Drawing scrutiny
The group's fund raising has generated some scrutiny, with reports showing that a portion of the money was received from elderly donors who were pursued with misleading appeals.

1. I hope plenty of recruiters crash the party.
All of these fine young repukes who, no doubt, support the troops, ought to be happy to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

5. After hours?
The booze was flowing during the fascist rally:

Undercover From the CRNC : Canto II

...The girl wearing pearls walked by some dude rocking a polo shirt and sneakers, which is in itself worth noting at this kind of a gathering (casual? what?). Even more noteworthy than his crazy liberal dress, though, was the collection of empty Busch Light cans under his chair. I counted 6. Pearls. Busch Light. Pearls. Busch Light...

Undercover From the CRNC : Canto VIII

...Inside the training, sparcely placed beer bottles (not cans this time, these guys are high class) punctuated the tables in Salon A. One young conservative felt the need to be wearing his aviators while he sipped on his Coors Light and listened to the speaker...

17. Coors Light?
Yuk, they would not know a good beer if it was right in front of them.

27. I mean, its made by Facists
Its the Beer of Peter Coors and Mary Cheney. And the BeerAdvocate reader's poll rates it the absolutely worst beer in the world. The reviews are hilarious. I won't let my over 21-year-old sons bring it in the house.

3. So where are the recruiters? These boys and gilrs
shoudl be joining in droves, after all Karl Rove said that they were willing to prepare for war.. that includes fighting it....

No, they have other priorities?

You mean they COULD get killed doing this?

4. College Republicans are some of THE biggest cowards alive
Their hypocrisy and cowardice is just as finely honed as their elders'. I had one call me a "brainless twit" once when I started a Facebook group called "Draft Young Republicans." :)

7. There will be an outbreak of anal cysts among this crowd.
If we have a draft.

Why don't these brave conservatives dance right on down to sign up for the War On Terror ?

Didn't they hear Condi say it was a "generational" war? They better get their little candy asses down to sign up for the US Army, like I did when I got out of high school.

8. Because they believe
that 'god' has put them here for a special purpose, to make money that is, and that the poor will do the fighting.

Man, I truly despise these people and all they stand for.

11. I'm hoping the poor will soon discover that
there isn't much for them to fight for. Unless the Army gives them cash, the promises of educational benefits, health care, etc aren't very reliable anymore. And the job market they return to can stink on ice depending on where they live and what they do.

Wow, what if the rich were the only ones who had anything to lose.

13. As a former college republican....
I can say that we thought we were somehow superior to all of the other students. I went to a small liberal arts school, so we republicans spent most of our meetings making fun of the colorfully dressed liberals at that school. We never really did anything productive, all talk and no action.

I'm sorry for being a member of this group, college life is a fantasy world, it took a real world slap in my face after graduation and working for a couple years to show me the light.

21. Welcome to DU!
Was there one particular "enlightenment moment"? Or was it the usual weary wearing down of those mundane, plebian concerns of food and shelter?

Have you kept up with your College "Pub' buddies"? How are they faring?

I hope you are enjoying the landscape in here and will continue to post. Cheers! :toast:

32. Thanks for the warm welcome
I didn't really have one enlightened moment, I just began to see the light.....kinda like a beautiful sunrise that's lasted 2-3 years. You must understand that I was brought up in a conservative home where Bill Clinton is an evil man, liberals want to take our money instead of work and it was a good thing when Paul Wellstone passed away.

Well, I moved far away from home to a city where I didn't know a soul. I was forced to make new friends by dropping my pre-conceived fears of people I didn't know. I now truly believe that fear of the unknown is what keeps the republican party united and alive. I was forced to accept the unknown and the resulting experiences has allowed me to befriend many different people of many different cultures, genders, religions and social status. I think the more "experienced" a person is when it comes to exploring outside of their comfort zone, the more likely they are to have an open and liberal mind.

This debacle in Iraq, the right's fear of gays, the poor, non-Christians and unwillingness to admit mistakes are the reasons why I switched to the left. I'd classify myself as a fiscal conservative and social liberal. My family refuses to talk politics with me now, my mom wonders what's happened to her son. That's ok.....I just tell her that it takes all kinds.

Anyways, I've lost touch with most of my fellow college republicans. One member did just get trounced in a bid to become mayor of a small town. Most of my close friends were through sports and life in the dorms anyways. Most are lefties, so we can send anti-Bu$h e-mails back and forth.

At least you saw the light, and followed it. Yes, the real world can be a shock sometimes, can't it? The important thing is that you had the good sense to follow the light. I hope you enjoy it here.

16. Actually, that's an unfair comparison...
Much as Hitler Youth was as much a fascist organization and were given lots of party perks, they were expected to walk their talk when ordered or end up in prison. It was a quasi-mixture of what we know as JROTC and National Guard - by being members, it meant Youth members were being trained to be more than just an army conscript; they were being trained to be replacement officers as the old school officers who didn't support Hitler were being phased out. And an army can never have too many 2nd Lieutenants.

As soon as Youth members were old enough, the majority of them ended up in the German Military. To be "privileged" and a Youth Member ending up in a cushy HQ or Propaganda job was one thing; to be a lazy coward when you were expected to pay for those privileges by putting on a uniform and toting a gun for der Furer and Country was another. And every one of them trained for that eventuality.
Hitler Youth members as young as 10 or 12 died in droves during the final months of WWII. They did what they were ordered to do, as payment for the privilege and "honor" of being a member of an elite "brotherhood".

I doubt you'd see most of the College Republicans willing to do so much as break a nail for the cause in Iraq or Afghanistan, even if it comes down to joining or pulling everyone out because policing a civil war is unsustainable.
If ordered, I'll guarantee you'd have enough whining to put the majority of California and French Vineyards out of business for a decade.
Oh, they'll do the acceptable duty like risking a paper cut putting up fliers calling for the elimination of everyone who doesn't toe their line...and would be perfectly willing to gang up on the odd liberal they find alone or in twosies/threesies. But to pick up a rifle and gear and actually go to face the "enemy" - naaa...

That's what they believe "stupid poor folk who can't get good enough jobs or bleeding heart liberals unwilling to live with lies and cheat the system" should be doing. If you talk with one, you soon find out they believe that if you're nothing but a drones who will end up as "drains on society" when you retire, you should be the first to pick up arms for the nation, as pre-payment for the support you will be getting because you just don't know how to work hard enough. Like most of these kids have a clue as to what it takes to get a job through talents rather than networking and to raise a family living paycheck to paycheck with very little money left over to fritter away on extraneous expenses - like a savings account or retirement portfolio.

Hitler Youth understood they were expected to die for their country if the need arose - not just if asked. They understood that once a member, buying one's way out of one's mortal duty was both dishonorable and verging on criminal. College Republicans? What do they understand?
