Pentagon building teen database for military recruiting
http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/5471542.html

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Defense Department began working Wednesday with a private marketing firm to create a database of all U.S. college students and high school students between 16 and 18 years old, to help the military identify potential recruits in a time of dwindling enlistment in some branches.

The program is provoking a furor among privacy advocates. The new database will include an array of personal information including birth dates, Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, grade point averages, ethnicity and what subjects the students are studying.

The data will be managed by BeNow Inc. of Wakefield, Mass., one of many marketing firms that use computers to analyze large amounts of data to target potential customers based on their personal profiles and habits.

"The purpose of the system ... is to provide a single central facility within the Department of Defense to compile, process and distribute files of individuals who meet age and minimum school requirements for military service," according to the official notice of the program.

Privacy advocates said the plan appeared to be an effort to circumvent laws that restrict the government's right to collect or hold citizen information by turning to private firms to do the work.

5. Most of this information was already readily available thanks to NCLB.
Automatic reporting of high school student info was an item quietly buried in No Child Left Behind.

You can opt of the NCLB's reporting of your kids' info to the Pentagon, but that cuts off reporting to colleges, too.

It should have been called No Child Left Undrafted.

17. Isn't That Some Shit?
You don't want us to keep your name, social security number, date of birth, GPA, classes, and other information that a state government entity collected and turn over to a federal government entity which then turned it over to a private corporation on file?

Okay, we'll just put all that information into a file for people who don't want to be part of the other file.

HELLO, DIPSHITS...

19. The poor....
are most likely to join the military out of necessity. Most of the poor in our nation are among minorities. Ergo; Blacks, Hispanics etc. will be targeted more forcefully than non-poor (White) young adults.

It's always been that way. The poor fight the rich man's wars for him. It's as American as apple pie! :grr:

22. I know, but
it's one thing to go to an inner city or poor rural school because it's the average income is low ... it's another to specifically target blacks no matter what their income is.

It's racist either way, but this is so blatant and trackable that I would hope we can prove discrimination and nail them for it. There's no legitimate reason for them to treat someone different because they are black, hispanic, etc.

24. Exactamundo.....
but WILL anyone call them on it? I certainly hope so, but I wouldn't bet one nickel that someone will and succeed in doing so. It tears at my heart to see minorities fight for so hard for this country and then be denied equal opportunities when they return from doing so. They're starting to wake up to reality now, the Army is having a devil of a time reaching their enlistment quotas. Their seemingly endless supply of poor, minority cannon fodder is drying up, and they're getting panicked because of it.

23. They don't care....
you see, they're part of the "winning team", or at least, they THINK they are. It's the same type of reaction to sports teams. If your team is winning, everyone comes out of the woodwork to support them.

Bush won (?) the election, so they associate themselves with the "winning" team. Their team can do NO wrong and they'll back them until they start losing. When they lose, they're not nearly as supportive. The Cons' "losing season" is approaching rapidly. Many will jump off the band wagon as soon as they can't identify with the "winners" any more.

It all boils down to that childish " winners and losers" mentality. What they don't understand is that even though they're the "winners", they're LOSING because their "winning team" doesn't give one crap about them. They're screwing their supporters royally, but they're too stupid to realize it because they're basking in the glory of being on the "winning team".

They pop up on campus and on the bullrtin boards at the grocery and other places.Mostly from the Guard and Reserves.

"Money for COLLEGE!!!!" "Just ONE weekend a MONTH!!!!"
"BIG BONUS! $$$$$$$ FOR SIGNING UP!!!!"

I write "Sign up for the 'weekend' that NEVER ends and DIE in Iraq" on them.

And don't lecture me about how that's "vandalism", because I don't give a rosy rat's ass, unnerstan? these are our KIDS I'm trying to save. What, you think a sheet of laser-printed cheap-assed GSA office paper is worth MORE than a young person's LIFE?

I don't. And I hope one of those used-car salesmen catches me marking up his sheet of lies, too.

Once the need for cannon-fodder has come and gone, if ever, they will have the beginnings of a national database of U.S. citizens.

Your website states....

"Welcome. In virtually any industry, you can point to companies that challenge perceptions and redefine the price/value ratio. Think Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, Charles Schwab....

(you forgot to add "Pentagon" here)

"At BeNOW, that's what we've done to Database Marketing."

My question for you is...what is the price/value ratio on the lives of teenagers of whom's personal information you are providing the Pentagon to support the war in Iraq?? The blood of Americas young will now be on your hands for an unjust war based all on a pack of lies.

Congratulations on your new contract.
