British troops out of Iraq as 'quickly as possible'
Britain hopes to withdraw its troops from Iraq "as quickly as possible," but only plans to do so when it is sure Iraqi forces can cope with the security threat, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Wednesday.

Speaking at a conference on the war-scarred country, he also reiterated that Britain was "ashamed" of prisoner abuses carried out by US and British forces, but maintains its call for Iraqi human rights standards to improve.

Straw's comments on British troop withdrawals came two days after a top US commander said that the United States will start to pull its forces out by next March.

Does anyone here believe that the insurgents will be defeated next March?

1. Next March we'll all be talking about
1) The ongoing war with Iran/Syria;
2) The ongoing impeachment hearings.

Either way, we're set for life.

3. They'll leave when bush tells them they can leave....
bush won't have his poodle taking such drastic action on his own. I'm sure another "barbecue" is being planned at the pig farm as we type to address this very question.

5. 'quickly as possible' sounds nice but means nothing
'quickly as possible' - right after we crush the insurgency, bring jeffersonian democracy to iraq, put a chicken in every pot, and a theme park in the middle of Basra.

6. More weasel words for the gullible.
Which fascist decides when it's "possible"? Only the sheeple would fall for such an open-ended guarantee.

7. If American and British forces leave the insurgency will diminish
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 03:36 PM by bennywhale
All the press information i've seen from around the world, including the Arab and Muslim world, and including video footage from the foreign fighters themselves, has the reasoning as defeating the infedel occupiers etc.

If the occupiers left, the ideological motivation for many in Jordan Syria, Iran etc and Europe would vanish. The violence would continue, and some would still enter Iraq to fight the "America puppet", as would some Iraqis but the numbers would be much, much less.

14. I think there will be a civil war after the US and GB withdrawal
until a strong man Saddam II emerged.

In other words, 1700+ soldiers would die for nothing. It's just a vedio game if you or your love ones are not in one of them.

10. As soon as possible - meaningless really
Particularly if the criterion is that "Iraqi forces can cope with the security threat" - that could be never. Still, this talk might unsettle the chimp a bit.
