FBI Probes Beating of Black Man in Texas

LINDEN, Texas - The FBI was helping police determine whether the beating of a mentally handicapped black man left unconscious on an East Texas road was a hate crime.

On Monday, an FBI agent began reviewing the beating of Billy Ray Johnson. The 42-year-old has been hospitalized since the Sept. 28 attack with head and facial injuries, including brusing to the brain.

"They're going to look it over and see if it fits a hate crime," Police Chief Alton McWaters said Tuesday morning.

Police investigator David Martinez said he believes a group of white men took Johnson to a party, beat him up and then dumped him out in the country. He was found in a ditch near the road in east Texas.

I was going to ask what the hell is wrong with East Texas??! I am glad I live in South Texas. The book by Michael Lind, Made in Texas, likely explains East Texas, unfortunately.
