Who will be Bush's Supreme Court nominee? (MSNBC)
Youth and ability to 'connect' with
senators and TV audience
will weigh in selection

<snip>

WASHINGTON - The last day of the Supreme Court’s term — often a day on which justices announce their retirements — is three weeks away. Anticipation is building in Washington that President Bush will soon have his first opportunity to fill a court vacancy.

The base line which Bush’s advisors and most GOP senators would use in considering nominees is an approach to judging that refrains from imposing social policy changes, such as redefining marriage, on American society.

There are two other factors the administration would use in assessing a nominee to the Supreme Court:

*Is the nominee young enough to be able to serve on the Supreme Court for 30 years?

*How well would the nominee withstand fire from Democratic interrogators on the Senate Judiciary Committee during confirmation hearings?

<snip>

It's that 'youth' thing that scares the hell out of me! Federalist Society justices sittin there for the next 30 or 40 years.

:mad:

Then imagine someone even WORSE. That is who they will pick.

5. somebody young enough to serve 30 years should NOT be on the court
I know that technically, one does not have to have any judicial experience to be appointed to the SCOTUS. But that is still ridiculous! Somebody shouldn't go from the mail room to CEO, straight from the police academy to chief, from boot camp to general, etc.

The Supreme Court should be composed of serious jurists with a lifetime of experience.

They used to do that every now and again.

Or is Orin too liberal nowadays for these fuckwads???

God... it's all so awful to contemplate.

8. Bork? Starr?
All you need to do to understand the next move of Junior's is to crimp your mindset into extreme vindictiveness and a childish need to make your enemies howl.

The latter's still too hot, but don't discount the former.

Maybe his current blunders will have him go for suitable feudal thugs, but you KNOW he wants to force people through JUST TO SHOW HE CAN. It's pre-adolescent. The juvenile mind needs to show others that they have no hope.

leftist, liberal by these looney toons, I would almost sigh relief if it were him. I really think we are looking at Janice Rogers Brown.

28. And Hatch is too old for their purposes.
I know some nice 20-something law students. Maybe the next democratic president could appoint them (wonder if you have to pass the bar exam before you're appointed....).

That's the end of reproductive rights, privacy rights and prisoner's rights for sure.

Isn't Ashcroft a little old for a 30-year term?

19. Ted Olsen, John Danforth or Orin Hatch - in that order of Bush's desire.
Edited on Thu Jun-09-05 06:10 PM by David Zephyr
I imagine they all will wind up on the SCOTUS, but I figure Olsen will be first.

Ted Olson is a good bet. And I'm registering as an Independent if the Dems don't fillibuster him.

22. Danforth's recent "chastising" of the religious right was for appearances.
The moment I heard John Danforth make his out-of-character comment about religiosity in government, I said to myself, 'that's Karl Rove speak'.

Still, I think Olsen has the inside track with the Bush family now.

26. But picking Danforth wouldn't appease the religious right, and they
are really going to be steamed if they don't get "their" guy on the Court. This is what they've been waiting for since 1980.

and that's mostly in texas ... ashcroft, olsen and starr will follow ... I predict 2 resignations, Rehnquist and O'Connor, with Scalia up for Chief and Gonzales goes in along with Olsen right away -- remember that no doubt Olsen KNOWS all about LIHOP and MIHOP on 9/11 besides arguing for the emperor wearing no clothes at the Gore unelection.
