VIENNA, June 8 (Reuters) - The United States will tell Mohamed ElBaradei it is prepared to drop its opposition to his bid for a third term as head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog but will demand he get tougher on Iran, diplomats said on Wednesday.
U.S. and European officials told Reuters U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will offer support for ElBaradei's candidacy as director-general of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency when she meets him on Thursday.
"The U.S. will support ElBaradei but it wants some things in return," a European diplomat told Reuters, adding these issues involved Iran and the general fight against nuclear arms proliferation.
Rice will press the Egyptian diplomat to be tougher on Iran over its nuclear programs, a U.S. State Department official, who asked not to be named, said.
