Senate Intelligence Committee approves new FBI powers in Patriot Act
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-06-07-congress-patriot-act_x.htm

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI would get expanded powers to subpoena records without the approval of a judge or grand jury in terrorism investigations under Patriot Act revisions approved Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Opponents said the new powers, part of the Bush administration's effort to renew and expand the 2001 law, violated basic civil rights.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said she voted against the bill in a closed committee meeting because it left open the possibility that such power could be used in criminal, rather than intelligence-gathering, inquiries.

The panel rejected one amendment that would have required that investigations have "as a significant purpose the collection of intelligence."

The American Civil Liberties Union released a statement criticizing both the substance of the bill and the closed-door meetings to write it.

1. As usual
there will be the pretense of complaining, or some will state later that they were unaware of what was in the bill, and the piece of shit will be passed. Gotta love that democracy thing.

8. Feinstein says will offer the amendment again in Sen. Jud. Comm.

The American Civil Liberties Union released a statement criticizing both the substance of the bill and the closed-door meetings to write it.

"When lawmakers seek to rewrite our Fourth Amendment rights, they should at least have the gumption to do so in public," said Lisa Graves, the ACLU's senior counsel for legislative strategy. "Americans have a reasonable expectation that their federal government will not gather records about their health, their wealth and the transactions of their daily life without probable cause of a crime and without a court order."

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and the panel's ranking Democrat, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., had no immediate comment.

The bill also must be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Feinstein and other Democrats planned to again offer their amendments.

14. I wish they would throw it in the trash and let
the worst provisions (ones that are supposed to sunset) of Patriot Act expire in December. Congress didn't even read it before they passed it into law!

And now this... which is clearly unconstitutional.

Are we going to live in a republic or not?

13. Senate Gives FBI More Patriot Act Power
----------------
WASHINGTON - The FBI would get expanded powers to subpoena records without the approval of a judge or grand jury in terrorism investigations under Patriot Act revisions approved Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Some senators who voted 11-4 to move the bill forward said they would push for limits on the new powers the measure would grant to law enforcement agencies.
----------------

----------------
Portions of the Patriot Act — signed into law six weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks — are set to expire at the end of 2005. The bill would renew and expand the act.

"When lawmakers seek to rewrite our Fourth Amendment rights, they should at least have the gumption to do so in public," said Lisa Graves, the ACLU's senior counsel for legislative strategy. 15. Our best bet on this?
The non Neo-Con Southern Seantors (Trent Lott, Thad Cochran, etc).

Trust me, a lot of the south (and R voting south) doesn't want the FBI anwhere near them, and certainly doesn't want to give them more power. This is a dixiecrat split issue, as many southerners still remember the FBI locking ppl up and federal troops being used here.

Not saying they will all buy into it, but if the party or others run advertising, I don't think it will take much to get many southern senators to tell the FBI to go to hell.

17. Senate Gives FBI More Patriot Act Power (Dems fold yet AGAIN!)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050608/ap_on_go_co/congress_patriot_act

WASHINGTON - The FBI would get expanded powers to subpoena records without the approval of a judge or grand jury in terrorism investigations under Patriot Act revisions approved Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee. Some senators who voted 11-4 to move the bill forward said they would push for limits on the new powers the measure would grant to law enforcement agencies.

"This bill must be amended on the floor to protect national security while protecting Constitutional rights," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski (news, bio, voting record), D-Md.

Ranking Democrat Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., supported the bill overall but said he would push for limits that would allow such administrative subpoenas "only if immediacy dictates." Rockefeller and other committee members, such as Sen. Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., also are concerned that the bill would grant powers to federal law enforcement agencies that could be used in criminal inquiries rather than intelligence-gathering ones.

Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said the bill places new checks and balances on the powers it would grant, such as new procedures that would allow people to challenge such administrative orders. He called the Patriot Act "a vital tool in the war on terror" and lauded the Democrats who voted for it in spite of misgivings.

Thank God that Democrats had some "misgivings" about decimating the 4th Amendment! Otherwise we might not be able to tell the difference between their yes votes and those of the Repukes praising their "courage"!

23. We can start voting Green in large numbers?
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 06:10 AM by ElectroPrincess
It may take awhile for us liberal Dem's to convince the moderates that we now only have one corporate party but it's worth the effort.

BTW if any of Nader's supporters are reading this, please know that I ask for your forgiveness. No politician is "pure" but Ralph Nader had it right when I was still in denial, compromising my standards and holding my nose to vote for Kerry instead of Nader. Ralph has this the "two parties = one big corporate welfare program" concept down correctly.

I'm sorry that I ever doubted him. I'll hold my nose and vote for Edwards, perhaps willingly vote for Clark, but if Hillary runs, I'm voting Green for sure.

I don't know about the rest of my fellow left of center, but I'm almost burned out from compromising and voting for DINOs. Looking at Biden, the war and his support of the bankruptcy bill - I don't understand why even moderate democrats believe that most of their representatives give a sh*t about the average hourly wage working stiff or even the middle class small business owner.

Whatever we do, let's all work together to get that horse's a** Senator Joe Biden out of office? I've never even visited Delaware but his challenger will receive a campaign donation from our family.
