Brad Pitt Says Media Focus Is 'Misguided'

NEW YORK - Brad Pitt is taking on poverty and AIDS in Africa — and the tabloids. In an hour-long ABC "Primetime Live" special set to air Tuesday night (10 p.m. ET), Pitt talks to Diane Sawyer about the humanitarian crisis in Africa.

"I can't get out of the press. These people can't get in the press. So let's redirect the attention a little bit," he tells Sawyer.

"We have the potential to end poverty (in Africa) in our time. ... Man — I mean, what is more exciting than that? The potential's there. We gotta go for it."

<snip>

Unfortunately, AP chose to spend the rest of the article talking about Bradalina and Jennifer... sigh. At least Pitt's heart is in the right place: He has done a PSA for One and has spoken out for One on numerous occasions.

Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Green or Independant... Standing up for those who are in need is good no matter what someones personal political beliefs are.

Good for you Brad it is enough to know you are doing something for those who can't!!

Jennifer or Jolie..but no one got it.

I already saw him in mags before the election with beaucoup Kerry t-shirts on. I know where he is politically. I was having fun with the TO's description of the interview.

35. Another "Media Whore" fallen into total disgrace. Pitt's the hero here!
I no longer know what's more disgraceful:

1. Bush Administration (Worse than the damn Mob).
2. War-Mongrel, Corporate-Run America Media WHORES.
3. War Profiteering Corporations that OWN the Media WHORES!
4. Hate-filled Other Half of Americans.
5. False Christian Hi-Jackers.
6. Patriot Acts, Nat'l ID Act, Banckruptcy Bill, Medicare, Social Security Treasury ROBBERY...

Shew. I'd be better to mention what isn't a disgrace.

Biggest Blame: THE TV MEDIA WHORES! They're "suppose" to be the ones we reply on to "investigate" while our troops are dying, innocent lives gone in the name of "Democracy," and "Jesus." Awww...

This much-hyped affair is money in the bank for Pitt and Jolie. Who knows if it's even true.

On Edit--it sounds like to me he is talking about the Africa issue because he's a nice guy or maybe he just gets bored talking about the same stuff all day.

10. There's always that, but since he is talking about the One campaign,
I like to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Rene Zellweger was on Oprah: After the Show talking with the audience about the obsessivness of the paparazzi and how she loves acting, doens't mind doing the red carpet thing and being on shows like Oprah, but she is tired of seeing herself on tabloids and having celeberity "news shows" dedicated to following her and others around. She is a Dem and wants actual news back.

There are actors who aren't completly shelfish... they just aren't nearly as plantiful! :)

19. I doubt that
Most of his contemporaries wouldn't even know what he is talking about when he refers to Africa. The fact that he can speak in an informed fashion on this topic makes his sincere interest in it plain. If he just wanted to redirect attention away from AJ he could as easily have chosen any number of other topics that would have been far more effective in doing so.

Nope, he means it.

17. Brad and Angelina recently attended a Quaker meeting
SAFFRON WALDEN, UK - Persons who attended the Saffron Walden Friends Meeting last week know something the rest of the world does not: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt would make "good Friends."

After Jolie and Pitt had visited the Sunday meeting, regular attendees said they were impressed by the pair's devotion to the ideals that inform the Society of Friends.

"They certainly look like they'd make good Friends to me," said Graham Newbury, a lecturer in history at Cambridge. "They're sober, thoughtful people who are serious about making the world a better place in which to live."

So I thought he was saying come to MY friend's no he was saying come to THE friends. I was like....as if I'm going to his friend's house when I don't even know him! Apparently there's a bit Quaker den that's real old and kinda groovy around downtown L.A., USC area??

Any critique of the media which reaches a wide audience (for whatever reason) is to be applauded.

I think I read somewhere that Angelina Jolie has been working with charities for a long time, and if she influenced (heh heh) Brad in this direction, hats off to her, too.

41. Brad Pitt has always been political
Of course the only time you hear about it is when Bill O'Reilly goes on the attack. And I would discourage you from watching that show, so you are unlikely to see much of Brad Pitt's political side. The rest of the media is too busy covering his sex life to actually cover the things he has done to raise awareness of global issues. That is I think why Pitt lashed out at the media in this interview, because he wants more attention given to the issues he works on and less attention to his personal life.

50. Yeah, to a certain extent that is true
I remember last year however when he travelled to the Middle East with Jennifer Aniston to talk about peace, and Bill O'Reilly and Joe Scarborough were screaming about it. I think he would really like to get more attention on his activism, but those are the only shows that cover it and they don't give any time for him to share his reasons for being engaged. I wish he would do more interviews with progressive publications, but he has certainly done more than many celebrities.

Wow...if only more celebrities were like him....

I was very moved by his recounting and talking about what is happening there...I loved the story he told about being in the hospital and touching the chest of a young child and the "power of the human touch" when the child looked at him, since these children don't have much touching or holding....

efforts for some time.

For instance, he became friends with the trainer and owner of Bart the Bear(Doug Sues--whom he met)while filming "Legends of the Fall". The Sues' have started purchasing tracs of wilderness area to keep it wild for the animals, but especially for the Grizzly Bear. Brad is a big supporter for such efforts

So, I don't believe this is just a stunt. He's truly involved and not just a mouth piece. His love of nature and humanitarian causes have been part of him all along.
