Bill For Iraq Reconstruction Goes Up, Up, Up

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct 3 (IPS) -- The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations said Friday that Iraq will need some $36 billion for reconstruction and infrastructure over the coming four years, some of which is expected to come from sales of Iraqi oil.

The assessment, in advance of a planned conference of international donors later this month, estimates overall reconstruction needs in the U.S.-occupied Arab country between 2004-07 in 14 sectors designated by international organizations as priority areas.

The international institutions say that this estimate is in addition to some $20 billion that the United States says is needed in crucial sectors not covered by the World Bank/U.N. assessment--including security and oil. The sectors covered by the $36 billion include education, health, employment, water, transport, housing, and investments in agriculture, the financial sector and financial legislation.

The amount will also cover work in human rights, gender and the environment.

2. Great.
We bomb the shit out of Iraq and the money goes to Haliburton. Then we rebuild Iraq and the money goes to Haliburton. How convenient is that?!

3. Totally unrelated
I like the map of Michigan -- it looks as if there's a giant arrow pointing left on top of it!

5. Hey
We're one of the only states where when we want to show someone where we live, we hold out our hand and point to a spot on it!

4. This country, and the world...
cannot afford to keep supporting the never satisfied greed of Bush, Cheney, and their cronies. It is costing too much in human life and suffering, too much in money, and too much in diverting most of this country's resources to support their habit.

Getting them out in 2004 will just be the start of the healing process; they have been allowed to do too much damage for too long. It will take generations to get this country back on track.

6. I agree!
When Bill Clinton was president, I was so proud to be an American. Now, I'm totally embarassed to be an American. If I was travelling abroad right now, I'd probably lie and tell people I was Canadian.

9. Get taxpayer to finance infrastructure at exorbitant prices
Then privatize it. This is the typical world bank IMF plan.

WTO/IMF to Iraq: Your water, your oil, your pipelines, your electricity, your phone system belong to us.
