NYT: Facing Chaos, Iraqi Doctors Are Quitting

BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 29 - The letter came to this city's main cardiac hospital late last month. It was unsigned and handwritten, but its message was clear: It threatened the hospital's top doctors and warned them to leave their jobs immediately.

No one knows who sent the letter, but the relentless violence here is often baffling. Four of the hospital's top surgeons stopped going to work. So did six senior cardiologists. Some left the country.

It was far from an isolated incident.

The director of another hospital, Dr. Abdula Sahab Eunice, was gunned down May 17 on his way to work, officials at the hospital said.

3. This has been going on for a while

It's amazing that there are any doctors left at all between the kidnappings, assassinations and death threats, not to mention supplies shortages and degraded/damaged facilities. Still many doctors keep plugging on. Where they get the will I don't know, but those who remain despite the horror of their work are among the most courageous people in Iraq.

Sometimes, I try to just think through living one day in their smocks. A few minutes is all I can get through before I shudder and have to turn my mind away. The horror must be maddening. The shift from horrified victim to murderous "terrorist" is all too easy to imagine.

as an oil company stooge and they should own up to all the years of sanctions against them and they should take responsibility for Shock and Awe and they should finally, finally take some responsibility for allowing themselves to be invaded by a much-hated, much distrusted empire.
