Family brings boys to D.C. to draw attention to frozen embryos
--------------------------
BY G. ROBERT HILLMAN
The Dallas Morning News
--------------------------
WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Doug and Heather Hutchens had come to the nation's capital from Texas on a singular mission: to show off their three young sons, adopted as frozen embryos.

"We wanted the public to see, to put a face on these embryos," Mrs. Hutchens said Wednesday, after returning home to Argyle, northwest of Dallas.

(snip)

At issue for the Hutchens family is embryonic stem-cell research. They oppose it because it would destroy the embryos in the process. And they paid their own way to Washington to bring their sons - Sam, Ben and David - to press their case as Congress considers the issue.

(snip)

Their 3-year-old twin sons, Sam and Ben, had already drawn a gaggle of photographers on Capitol Hill, but were confounded a bit by the White House.

"Mommy," Hutchens recalls them asking as they faced the wrought-iron gates. "Are we at the zoo?"

9. 400,000 frozen embryos across the country
Does the Snowflake Organization think they are going to get 400,000 women to PAY and CONSENT to donate their embryos? Do they think there are 400,000 women who are willing to have these embryos implanted?

Concerned Women for America are saying that 90% of those embryos will be adopted. Ok, right. Wanna buy a bridge?

4. Her actions don't even make sense ...
... even with embryonic stem cell research she would be able to "adopt" embryos.

Do we parade people suffering from spinal cord injuries, Alzheimer's dx ... and point out that these people could be helped.

I am so sick of these right wing wackos taking these dramatic nonsensical actions:banghead:

29. Do we parade people suffering? Well, yeah, we do.
I hardly ever watch network news any more, but the stem-cell research advocates had a Parkinson's patient delivering her message (which I really can't do justice here--suffice to say, it was very moving, and involved a doctor "prescribing" hugs from her little boy as the most effective treatment right now.)

This is an issue we own and the RW are going to get pounded on it.

5. They complain about stem cell research...
Edited on Wed May-25-05 07:03 PM by dethl
But they don't complain about embryos that get discarded in labs due to whatever might be the reason. EDIT: Typical RW mindsets.

6. What's next?
Bring used tampons and condoms to DC to show what might have been? :eyes:

A note to Doug and Heather Hutchens: Thank you for the biology lesson, but believe it or not, we all know where babies come from. No one is denying that an embryo could, someday, under the right circumstances, become a full-fledged human being. But that doesn't mean it qualifies as a human being while still an embryo.

A child is human life.
An embryo is potential human life.
Get it now? :eyes:

7. Yeah, all white and all male.
How very fortunate for them.

I'll believe the right wing are serious about adopting out all the thousands of frozen blastocysts when the Bush twins are preggers with adopted embryos.

Until then, put a sock in it. I know where they're really at.

16. I think you should do that.
Just make sure you wear a catchy slogan on your T-shirt. You need to come up with a clever name for your disease, too. They have "Snowflakes." You can be one of the "Sugar Babies." (Unless that would offend people of color ...?)

14. What kind of parents would
want their children to live with the stigma of being known as the end result of being a frozen embryo to be used as a political tool. "Mommy ,are we at the zoo?" Good question, honey.

15. "Mommy, are we at the zoo?"
"Yes, dear. Don't get too close to the chimp. I hear he's dangerous. He likes to kill people."

"Will he kill me?"

"No, honey. He only likes to kill Muslims with dark skin and other people he thinks are expendable."

"What's 'expendable' mean?"

"Well, that's when you don't matter. Like when you are cannon fodder."

"Does that mean you get shot from a cannon?"

"Well, not exactly....You know what....Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all. Let's go home."

17. Excellent Thread!
Bush is trying to meet the radical extremists demands to turn this country into a theocracy. No, he doesn't value life or we wouldn't be in Iraq killing and being killed. Nor would we be executing people on death row.

Bush has selective values, when it comes to who lives.

21. The frozen embryos can be brought to life
in most cases. Bush has pushed no legislation to keep them from being destroyed (tossed in the garbage). Maybe someone should ask him why not?

26. What, they couldn't find any thawed out and grown up embryos to adopt
anywhere? Maybe, some that were never frozen in the first place? I bet there are a couple of kids lying around who might need a place to live, people to call their parents... Oh, the humanity of it all.

28. Embryos are not babies!!!
Embryos are frozen at the 2 to 8 cell stage, invisible to the human eye without magnification. At that stage, they're not people.

Can't these people deal with anything rationally? Why do right-wingers have to take such an extreme stance on everything?

I have a child born as the result of IVF treatment. I had two other embryos put back into my womb at the same time but they didn't implant. I was lucky enough to get my son out of the procedure but I certainly don't think of those other two embryos that didn't implant as babies.

30. Well, of course these sickos think embryos = BAYBEEZ!
why else do they believe a pharmacist should be able to "conscienciously object" to dispensing morning after and/or birth control pills? In their whacked-out minds, every fertilized egg that isn't carried to term is a tragic death.
