Conservative Groups Say Senators Sold Out GOP
Activists are outraged by a deal that doesn't guarantee up-or-down votes on all nominees.

By Richard Simon And Mary Curtius, Times Staff Writers

WASHINGTON — Conservative groups that spent millions of dollars preparing for a Senate fight over use of the filibuster to block votes on President Bush's judicial nominees reacted with outrage Monday night at a compromise that averted the showdown.

Several furious conservative activists accused Republican senators who supported the compromise of selling out Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn), saying they wanted nothing short of guaranteed up-or-down votes on every judicial nominee.
(snip)

Of the seven Republicans who signed the compromise agreement, Sheldon said: "They didn't have the backbone and the fortitude to stand up for the fact that we are the majority."

James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, which had been lobbying GOP senators to hold firm, expressed his "disappointment, outrage and sense of abandonment."

Come election day, he said, "voters will remember both Democrats and Republicans who betrayed their trust."

37. I don't think so
I think we accept the compromise for what it represents -- a chance for moderate voices to take more control of the out of control far right GOP. Yes, yes, I don't like all of it, either, but I do not think it's a big loss for us.

Meanwhile, we should all pull together and pop some popcorn and enjoy as we watch as the far right starts to pull the GOP apart. Rejoice as they eat their own. That can only be good for us, and for our prospects in 2006.

3. And here's the list . . . of moderates . . .
And here's the list of (so-called) "moderates" who signed the compromise/agreement:

Democrats:
Robert Byrd (West Virginia)
Daniel Inouye (Hawaii)
Mary Landrieu (Louisiana)
Joseph Lieberman (Connecticut)
Ben Nelson (Nebraska)
Mark Pryor (Arkansas)
Ken Salazar (Colorado)

Republicans:
Lincoln Chafee (Rhode Island)
Susan Collins (Maine)
Mike DeWine (Ohio)
Lindsey Graham (South Carolina)
John McCain (Arizona)
John Warner (Virginia)
Olympia Snowe (Maine)

And here's the Senate compromise/agreement: http://rawstory.com/aexternal/the_filibuster_deal_523 (so says rawstory.com, anyway)

It's my view that these 14 U.S. Senators have secured U.S. Senate seats w/o any attempted "pay back" by extremist religion-into-law rightwing zealots! That, or they sure n hell wouldn't have signed onto this agreement.

11. Might as well vote down those nominees, then. What difference will it
make to the RW neocon funddies? If I were one of those Senators that those ungrateful, terrorizing RWingnuts threatened, I would make their threats count for something and vote against those three judges that will have an up or down vote.

12. The Biggest Consequence Of The Filibuster Compromise ...
... could very well end up being the splintering of the GOP/Christian Right coalition. Watching Critter Dobson and the rest of the Liars for the Lord going after the "traitors" within the GOP like they're Democrats will be a fine sight to see.

The GOP is becoming unhinged, and its march to the right is now leaving some of its own behind.

38. Good point, you're right.
This has been an ongoing process, and I think this is the first really gross public split between the fundie wackos and the moderate repubs. The failure of the federal anti-same-sex marriage amendment was of that ilk too, but in this case the right-wing really expected to win it all. I think you're right, a major split is coming, and that could mean the end of the Republican party as we know it.

14. Dobson Blasts Filibuster 'Betrayal'

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=47847

"This Senate agreement represents a complete bailout and betrayal by a cabal of Republicans and a great victory for united Democrats. Only three of President Bush’s nominees will be given the courtesy of an up-or-down vote, and it's business as usual for all the rest. The rules that blocked conservative nominees remain in effect, and nothing of significance has changed. Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice Antonin Scalia, and Chief Justice William Rehnquist would never have served on the U. S. Supreme Court if this agreement had been in place during their confirmations. The unconstitutional filibuster survives in the arsenal of Senate liberals.

16. Wait
Why would Thomas, Scalia and Rehnquist have not been confirmed if this agreement--which is basically just an agreement to keep the rules the same as they are now--was in effect? For one thing, the Democrats controlled the Senate when all three of those traitorous bastards were confirmed.

I mean, I like seeing Dobson badmouthing the Republicans and tearing up his own party and all, I just think he's a stupid fuck, and I don't like stupid fucks who don't know they are stupid fucks.

41. See, here's a major difference between Republicanite and Dem tactics
The Republicanites didn't get every single last thing they wanted, so they see it as a defeat.

The Democrats settled for a few minor things that they wanted, and they're congratulating themselves for winning.

This is why the Republicans have come so far in the past twenty years.

42. Good point...
... It seems that the GOP wants it more and expects more of themselves than do Dems. And that could be why they are the majority.

Like: "Yay, Bush gets 3 more judges we blocked last time and is still free to threaten to go nuclear in the future. We Win!"

If they engineer another crisis and get a few more judges through will we be the winners again?

Why don't we just declare that we want what they want and then we can "win" all the time?

43. this is bullshit
to make it seem like the pukes didn't get what they wanted. The worst of the nominees, especially Owens, will now get their floor vote and will probably get confirmed to the bench in DC. That was the prize and they appear to have gotten it. Rove probably wrote the script for Dobson and Bauer - this ploy is so transparent.

I'm sure they feel the same way Phillip II Hapsburg of Spain felt in 1588 when the Spanish Armada was defeated, not by the English, but by God Himself, with hurricanes and gales in the North Sea.
